Minnesota Timberwolves president Flip Saunders apparently has little patience for breaking the rules. After Shabazz Muhammad was kicked out of the NBA Rookie Transition Program for having a woman in his room, Saunders hinted that Muhammad might be staring at a lengthy stint in the D-League if he doesn’t shape up. Before last year’s college basketball season, Muhammad – as a freshman – was supposed to be one of the best players in the nation and a potential top five pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. After a disappointing first collegiate season, he dropped to the 14th pick in the draft, and the Timberwolves acquired him in a draft-night trade with Utah Jazz. In the span of one year, Muhammad has gone from a can’t-miss prospect to a guy who has a lot of work to do on both his on-court and off-court image. Saunders had the following to say about Muhammad: In our league, you have to be disciplined and being “disciplined” is being able to adhere to whatever rules are given and you gotta abide by the rules. So that’s been disappointing. But when I talk to him, he’s either gonna learn the rules and learn to abide by things with the big boys or he’s gonna really quickly learn a geography class: where Des Moines is in the NBDL down in Iowa. It’s pretty clear that Muhammad is going to have a very short leash with the T-wolves. He wasn’t great in Summer League games and just seemed to be willing to throw up shots from anywhere on the floor. Muhammad will likely be coming off the bench behind Kevin Martin and Chase Budinger on the wing in Minnesota, so not much will be expected from him early in his career.
