Detroit got a 5-2 win tonight, thanks in large part to the power play suddenly clicking. It was just a matter of time before those chances turned to goals. Howard was solid when needed and the PK was sound when called upon. More after the jump: Glendening made his NHL debut and played well. He was really good on the late power play opportunity when Detroit was only up 3-2. He had a couple shots, too, though none were a real threat. Based on one game, I’d say Glendening > Emmerton. The stars showed up tonight, finally. I was especially thrilled to see Alfie tally 3 assists. Pavel also seemed more willing to shoot the puck rather than pass for the sake of passing and scored the GWG. The Amazing Adventures of Brendan Smith: He didn’t play tonight, but I imagine he enjoyed seeing the team win… from outer space or the Middle East. Just to make it interesting. NOHS Three Stars of the Game: First Star: Jimmy Howard. I know in a 5-2 game you’d think the goalie didn’t have to be great, but the score was tight with less than 10 minutes to play and Howard made some great saves. Second Star: Alfredsson. Like I mentioned above, 3 helpers. He’s going to be a huge part of the power play, so it’s good to see him getting comfy in red and white. Third Star: Pavel Datsyuk. 1G 2A and looked good doing it. Honorable Mentions: Bertuzzi is like Abdelkader, but with hands. Abby was wrecking guys all night. I’d love to have him on a third line that was kind of a grinder/scorer hybrid line. You know, the kind cup winners tend to have? Kronwall was great, too. Things to Keep Doing: Scoring goals. We still haven’t iced the best team possible yet, but we’ll take the win tonight. Things to Stop Doing Forever: Benching Tatar. Other than that, it was a good effort and a good win, so I can’t complain. The recap was short because I’m sick and I don’t get paid to do this. Such is life. Next game is against Boston on Monday in the middle of the frigging afternoon for no good reason. Let me know how it goes, since I’ll be at work. LGRW
