Pedro Martinez, who hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since his start in Game 6 of the 2009 World Series for the Phillies, is very close to retiring from a 19-year major league career that included three Cy Young awards, eight All-Star teams, 219 wins, and five ERA titles. Martinez was brought to Philly halfway through the ’09 season and gave the team a strong contribution down the stretch, going 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in nine starts. He was clearly at the end of the line at that point, as he averaged fewer than five innings per start, pitching four innings or fewer on four separate occasions. Martinez actually got the start in both Game 2 and 6 of the World Series, losing both to the New York Yankees. His stats for those two games weren’t too good, as he let up seven runs in 10 innings for a 6.30 ERA.
