Francisco Liriano is back?

That’s what people keep saying. All these different fantasy baseball “guru’s” have been pumping Liriano to the point that he’s the most added starting pitcher in ESPN leagues. He had three quality starts in a row, and since returning to the starting rotation has clearly been better than he was earlier in the season, but back? I don’t think so.

He’s still walking people at a rate of 5.17 per 9 innings and when you’re doing that, you’re gonna have a bad time. It doesn’t help that the Twins are terrible. So even if Liriano has a stellar start it’s going to be hard for him to improve his 2-7 overall record.

The Twins lefty may be pitching better, but there are plenty of other options out there that weren’t studs in 2006. Isn’t it amazing that 2006 was the last time Liriano had a WHIP of less than 1.26? And since 2006 his average WHIP is somewhere around 1.45.

Stop buying in on a name. Especially when it probably isn’t even his real one.

The Mets have pitchers other than Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey?

Jonathan Niese and Dillon Gee have been plugging along all season. Niese has been the better of the two, giving up only 12 runs in his last 7 starts. He’s also been averaging over 1 strikeout per inning and backing that up with some pretty good control.

Gee has had a bit of hard luck when it comes to getting wins, but that doesn’t mean it’s for lack of trying. He has not given up more than three runs in 9 of his last 10 starts. Not bad for a guy that I literally had never heard of until this year.

Can you trust Jair Jurrjens?

He went from an All Star to designated for assignment. Now he’s back and appears to be pitching like his old self. Since returning, he’s had two quality starts against two quality teams in Boston and Arizona. The three walks in only 5.2 innings in his last start – without a strikeout – may be a little concerning. But for now, Jurrjens seems safe to add.

Is Dice-K worth it?

You know what you’re going to get from Dice-K. Somewhere in the range of 5-6 innings with 4-7 K’s, 2-4 earned runs, 100-110 pitches and a bunch of communication issues. But as long as he doesn’t walk many people – and so far he hasn’t been – then Dice-K can be a serviceable to very serviceable fantasy pitcher.

The A’s staff are the best staff you’ve never heard of

This isn’t a question, it’s a statement of fact. Unless you’re from the bay area, or really love the AL West, then you’ve most likely never heard of most of these guys. But that doesn’t mean these kids can’t pitch. Between Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone, Brandon McCarthy (on the Dl right now) and the recent addition of Travis Blackley makes you wonder why they ever bothered signing that fat **** Bartolo Colon if they have home grown talent like this. All of the guys I mentioned (minus that fat ****, Colon) are worth a look. Even if you just need a one day streamer.

Michael Fliers has a bit of a scoreless streak going

19 innings to be exact. This things tend to make me a little nervous – especially when it’s a rookie like Fliers – but if you’re feeling daring, go ahead and give the kid an add and ride this thing till the wheels fall off.
