Rockies (51-59) at Pirates (65-43) 7:05 PM–PNC Park, Pittsburgh MLB.com Gameday TV: ROOT The Bucs take on Colorado for the first time this year as they continue this giant homestand. The remaining games are not as exciting in terms of the opponent, but give the Bucs a chance to gain ground. The Rockies have struggled in an awful NL West division and certainly don’t boast great pitching. Tonight’s starters… Jhoulys Chacin (9-5, 3.54) vs. Gerrit Cole (5-4, 3.56) Chacin has been pretty good this season, but has been awful in his career against the Pirates. Cole looked excellent in his last start, despite taking a loss. He has been very impressive so far in the second half.

Stopper Liriano Pitches Seven Scoreless in 5-2 Pirates Win

Francisco Liriano dug up another gem for his 12th win of the season. (Photo Credit: David Hague) When the Pirates need to stop a losing streak, they send out their stopper. Francisco Liriano has become the stopper. He and the Pirates are now 12-4 in his starts after beating the Colorado Rockies 5-2 on Saturday night, and by doing so stopped a two-game losing streak from turning into...

Pirates Notebook: Jared Hughes Rides Again

They said he would never return. Who said that? Well… (Photo Credit: David Hague) Clint Hurdle had only one hope left. He tossed aside the morning paper, headline splashed “PIRATES LOSE 13-0,” and hopped into his pickup truck. He took the fast lane, following the signs for Indianapolis. “Well, the man did say he wanted to get away from it all,” he thought. Clint’s truck...

Colorado Rockies attendance affected by the humidor?

A recent post on the Denver Post’s “On The Rox” blog addressed a question asked during The Press Box, a Rockies radio program. Host Peter Burns bounced the question of unplugging the humidor off his guests. Burns suggested that a return of “high scores and home run bombs” would drive more fans to Rockies games. For those who aren’t familiar with the humidor, it is...

Walt Weiss and Colorado Rockies sleep through four game sweep in Atlanta

Was Walt Weiss sleeping in the dugout? If the Colorado Rockies brass tries to say that the team hasn't given up, all one needs to do is point to the 2nd inning of the Rockies embarrassing 11-2 loss to the Braves on Thursday night.Following a called third strike on the Rockies All-Star shortstop to end the inning, Tulo turned to home plate umpire Marvin Hudson and told him what...

Game 110: Pirates 5 Rockies 2

Francisco Liriano didn't really seem to have his best stuff tonight, but that hardly mattered at all. He walked five hitters in his seven innings, but the Rockies only managed two hits off of him, and so they didn't score at all. The Pirates constantly seemed like they were falling one hit short of an offensive breakout all night, but when you score in five straight innings...

Presley hopes to contribute down the stretch

OF Alex Presley, who has been on the shuttle between Triple-A Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, was recalled by the Pirates on July 29 and has seen action in both left field and right field. Pirates 5, Rockies 2

Francisco Liriano continued his recent dominance with seven strong innings, and Jose Tabata homered and drove in two runs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. Liriano (12-4) allowed only two hits to offset his five walks and had six strikeouts. The left-hander improved to 7-1 with a 1.65 ERA in his last eight starts for the NL...

Game 109: Rockies 4 Pirates 2

I suppose that as bouncing back from 13-0 losses goes, this wasn't ideal. Really, what happened was that one bad inning probably kept the Pirates from winning this game. Gerrit Cole looked really sharp in the first inning, but his slider flattened out a bit in the second and he gave up a home run to Troy Tulowitzki. He certainly didn't have his best outing tonight, but he...

Braves offense keeps rolling over Rockies as win streak reaches 6

The Rockies picked the wrong time to face the resurgent Braves who suddenly are playing as if they aim to clinch a division title by early September. Freddie Freeman had four hits Brian McCann hit a three-run homer for the second consecutive night and Mike Minor pitched seven near-perfect innings Wednesday night in a 9-0 rout against Colorado that pushed the Braves’ winning streak...
