Raise the Jolly Roger!:
Cubs (18-25) at Pirates (26-18)
7:05 PM–PNC Park
The Chicago Cubs are in town for the first time since the opening series as the Bucs look to continue a strong homestand against struggling teams.
The Cubs may not actually be as bad as people perciece them to be. Their run differential is just -3, and their starting pitching has been pretty solid. They’ve already taken two of three from the Bucs at PNC and the Bucs are coming off a pretty mediocre weekend, so this may not be an easy series victory.
Matt Garza (0-0, 0.00) vs. Wandy Rodriguez (4-2, 3.25)
Garza is making his season debut (he’s been injured) and will strengthen the Cubs’ staff. He has been very solid when healthy for the last two seasons, although he has only faced the Bucs three times (1-1, 3.79). Garza is the one pitcher I fully endorse bunting against at all times - he’s had all kinds of problems throwing the ball to first for some reason.
Wandy has righted the ship after a somewhat rough stretch a few weeks ago. He’s been very good at home and pitched a gem in the opening series against the Cubs at PNC.

Starling Marte is out of the lineup tonight – just for a day off. Andrew McCutchen is back.

BEST OF MAXIM
Matt Garza did in fact return to the mound on Tuesday and actually pitched rather well despite his bullpen failing. Garza was coming back from injury and thus was subject to a pitch count as the Cubs wanted to make sure he was comfortable and could handle the load based on a carefully crafted plan. Safe to say Garza passed his test and he should be given a longer leash next time...
Asofsky reported early Tuesday morning that Chicago Cubs starting pitcher
Matt Garza will make his 2013 debut as he pitches the May 21 series opener with
the Pittsburgh Pirates in the steel city. For Garza, tonight’s appearance will
mark his first Major League game since last July. Garza’s 2012 season ended
early due to a shoulder injury. While fully recovered...
Guess who’s back? After nearly ten months of recovery and setbacks from an injured elbow, Matt Garza returned to the mound Tuesday night and picked up right where he left off last July.
In his debut start of the season, Garza worked five scoreless innings, surrendering one hit and striking out five, while walking allowing three walks.
With an established pitch count of 85, Garza...
The Chicago Cubs have been waiting for this moment for quite some time, nearly 10 months to be exact, as they have activated right-handed starter Matt Garza, who has looked goo on his minor league rehab stint, from the disabled list on Tuesday. Expect him to jump right into the starting rotation with someone being bumped, most likely Carlos Villanueva. I’m not trying to play devils...
Chicago Cubs starter Matt Garza missed most of spring training with a lat injury on the heels of missing most of the second half of last season with an elbow problem.
Garza last pitched in a major-league game in July 2012, but will return to make his season debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates after being activated from the disabled list.
In his latest rehab start, the right-hander...
Great win last night. The Pirates did exactly what I said they had to do, get Matt Garza to his pitch count and pummel the Cubs crappy bullpen. That’s why you should read TiGO every day! Many people have been very impressed with Francisco Liriano as a Pirate. How can you argue? He’s 2-0 with a…
Travis Snider hit a pinch-hit grand slam during a five-run sixth and the Pittsburgh Pirates spoiled a strong return to the mound for Matt Garza with a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
Garza allowed one hit over five shutout innings in his first outing in 10 months, but the Pirates pounced on a Chicago bullpen that is 10th in the National League in ERA by sending 11...
After losing two of three games to the New York Mets, as well an off day, the Chicago Cubs (18-25) will begin a three game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates (26-18).
Here are the pitching matchups:
Tonight’s game will beging at 6:05 p.m. CST, broadcast on CSN. Taking the mound will be Matt Garza, who will be making his start of the season, after not pitching in a major...
If the Pittsburgh Pirates truly want to contend, they will probably need to improve their play against the lowly Chicago Cubs.
The Pirates, who dropped their first series against the Cubs, expect to have Andrew McCutchen back in the lineup as they try to spoil Matt Garza's season debut in Tuesday night's opener of a three-game home set.
Pittsburgh (26-18) has won eight...

Final: Pirates 5, Cubs 4 (box)
WP: Wandy Rodriguez (5-2, 3.40 ERA)
LP: James Russell (1-1, 1.04 ERA)
SV: Jason Grilli (18, 1.31 ERA)
Wandy Rodriguez started off shaky by giving up three runs in the second inning, but finished things up nicely going six innings allowing just those three runs. He struck out five and didn’t walk a batter. Rodriguez has given up three or less runs...
You can take pretty much any old baseball adage about gutting out a win on a night when you don't play your best game and apply it to this 5-4 Pirate win against the Cubs right here, but it doesn't mean that the win counts any less. Wandy Rodriguez didn't quite have his best stuff tonight, which got the Pirates in a 3-0 hole in the second inning after Matt Garza hit a...
Five of seven from the Brewers and Astros was an acceptable outcome. More would've been nice, but this is baseball. No one wins every day. The schedule is about to get a little bit tougher, though, so getting at least two wins from the Cubs here would be a pretty big thing. Matt Garza makes his 2013 debut tonight, so it'd be nice to see the Pirates wear him out early and...
