The Angels are messing with baseball's narrative. National writers want so badly to get on to the business of celebrating the A's and Orioles (and to be fair they have been quite remarkable), but the Angels simply will not go away. Didn't anyone tell them their shot at the playoffs is over? Why do they insist on just hanging around on the fringes with something akin to a punchers chance? But here they are, 3 1/2 games out with 11 to play. Given what we saw last year, why can't the Angels still make the playoffs? How long before hanging around becomes hanging on to the magic last wild card slot? Not so far fetched when you think about it.

Angels 6 White Sox 2

Game Notes

-- Speaking of messing with narratives, Mike Trout re-emerged tonight in the AL MVP race. The past week has been one hyperbolic article after another about Miguel Cabrera's run at the triple crown, but Trout staked his own claim with a virtuoso performance tonight. He showed his power with an opposite field home run and his speed with a ridiculous first to third trip on a clean single. This race too will come right down to the wire.

-- Nice to see Albert Pujols get a clutch hit for a change. I have noticed too many times this year that Albert has been less than stellar when the Angels really needed a hit. Tonight's two run single to give them the lead was the first real clutch thing he has done in over a month.

All other story lines pale in comparison to Ervin Santana's pitching. After he allowed a lead off home run he went on to be scary dominant on his way to 7 innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 11. It was what the Angels needed and it is once again evidence that Ervin could be the best Angel pitcher on the staff when his head is screwed on right. As frustrating as he can be, Santana dealing is a sight to see and tonight was a prime example of his importance to this team now and in the future.

Mike Trout Interview with AngelsWin.com

Interview Conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer It's hard to imagine what it's like to be 21 years old. For those of us past it, those bygone days seem so long ago and carefree. For those not yet there, it seems so distant. Few may ever get to experience a year like the one Mike Trout has had. To say it is phenomenal is an understatement. Historical...

ESPN The Magazine Examines How Mike Trout Will Age

A phenomenal read about Mike Trout (the Justin Upton piece is great too) brought to us by ESPN the Magazine today, and a nice reference to a decent movie that my wife made me attend. Everybody’s writing about him and trying to find that good new angle,” said one of the beat writers in the Angels’ press box in early July. “Kid’s 20. What sort of interesting story could...

Vote: Will Miguel Cabrera or Mike Trout Win the American League MVP?

The American League MVP race was supposed to have been settled by now. Super-rookie Mike Trout was running away from the competition, thanks to his scorching bat and his unbelievable defense in the outfield for Los Angeles. Then, a funny thing happened. Miguel Cabrera started getting hot, and is now contending for the first Triple Crown in the major leagues since 1967. With the award...

Whether Trout or Cabrera wins AL MVP, prepare for outrage

Ask anyone who the AL MVP should be... OK, not anyone, that homeless guy that lives beneath the underpass near the freeway on-ramp you take to get to work probably doesn't have a ready answer, but ask any baseball fan who the AL MVP should be and you are certain to get a very definitive answer.  They will tell you that the answer is clear and not even remotely up for debate...

Mike Trout Favorites Basket Auction Includes: Jersey Shore DVD, Eagles Shirt & Dill Pickles!

Ask 100 random people who Mike Trout is . Unless you’re at a sports bar or in Los Angeles, only 15 or so will know this guy is the best thing to happen to baseball since Ken Griffey Jr. debuted in 1989. If it wasn’t for a Triple Crown year from Miguel Cabrera, Trout would win the A.L. Rookie of the Year and MVP. But what do we really know about this guy? Thanks to an Angels...

Mike Trout Could Win AL MVP Over Miguel Cabrera Based on Sabermetrics (Video)

As nearly every playoff race in the American League becomes closer, so does the MVP race between Angels outfielder Mike Trout and Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera. Going into Sunday's games, Cabrera is the clear favorite based on standard statistics. He leads the league in batting average, home runs and RBIs -- the Triple Crown categories. No one has won the Triple Crown since...

AL MVP Debate Over, Triple Crown Or Not – Trout Is Tops

Over the last few days, I’ve seen multiple articles about how Miguel Cabrera should receive serious consideration for the AL MVP award, in light of the fact that he has a decent shot at becoming baseball’s first Triple Crown winner in 40+ years. This comes after a summer of Mike Trout fever, wherein baseball minds across the country agreed that we were seeing something special...

Case for the American League Most Valuable Player

This race might be the tightest race in recent memory. Two guys stand out above most others. Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have separated themselves from the rest of the American League and the chase for Most Valuable Player is a two-horse race. It comes down to a 21-year-old phenom, and a player chasing the Triple Crown...

Things Still Fall Apart

Like any good book, the baseball season unfolds as a series of intriguing stories. Mike Trout. Bryce Harper. The Baltimore Orioles. The Boston sell-off. ROIDS!!! These are all striking plot lines that draw us in, forcing us to check Twitter and MLB Trade Rumors and MLB Tonight as often as Mr. Krause uses a 5-year old picture of me looking like a goof. Yet, at the end of the season...

Marlins make rookies wear speedos, dress as water polo team for hazing (Pictures)

And the rookie hazing continues. Some rookies get off easy and are forced to dress in Star Wars gear while others have to wear something a little more, shall we say, snug. As you can see from the photo above that Giancarlo Stanton shared on his Twitter account, the Marlins rookies had to wear speedos and dress as the U.S. men’s water polo team on Thursday — the day before they...

Verlander: It’d be “bull $#@&” if Cabrera doesn’t win the AL MVP

There has been a hot debate recently over who should win the American League Most Valuable Player award – Mike Trout, the rookie center fielder of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, or Miguel Cabrera, the Detroit Tigers’ third baseman. Following Wednesday night’s Tigers game in which the Tigers beat the Oakland A’s 6-2 behind six innings of shutout ball from Verlander and...

Angels 6, White Sox 2

Ervin Santana struck out 11 while pitching seven innings of two-hit ball and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Chicago White Sox 6-2 on Friday night to gain ground in the playoff race. Mike Trout and Kendrys Morales homered for Los Angeles, which pulled within 3 1/2 games of Oakland for the second AL wild card. The Athletics lost 2-1 to the New York Yankees in 10 innings. Chicago...

The Triple Crown Is Not Evil

There has been a lot of banter about the Most Valuable Player Award this week. While the National League has an even field with multiple candidates, it’s the American League — with  Mike Trout and Miguel Cabrera — that’s gotten most of the attention. At the center of the debate is baseball’s triple crown, an incredibly rare achievement that is within reach for Cabrera...
