Week 3 of the preseason is here! Each passing week simply means that the regular season is just that much closer. This week’s task is set on the Jacksonville Jaguars. This will be the first of two away games to conclude the 2013 preseason. This preseason has looked quite promising for Eagles fans for the most part. We’ve seen some of Chip Kelly’s up-tempo offense. We’ve also seen the Eagles defense change from a 4-3 defense into a 3-4, although, there’s been several times where we wish we didn’t have to see the defense at all as it has given fans flashes of last year.
However, this game will most likely be the last chance for some players who are trying to make the Eagles roster this upcoming season. And even though, this game is crucial for some players, it also carries some sense of ease as the spotlight won’t be on who will be the starting quarterback for the Eagles as Michael Vick has solved that question.
The positions that will be looked at the closest in my opinion would be on the defensive side. The [secondary] defense is horrendous. Aside from defensive line, and for the most part linebacker, the cornerback and safety position has frightened some already this preseason, myself included. No matter how you put it, the battle for the final safety spot doesn’t look good whatsoever. Whether it’s Nate Allen, Earl Wolff, Kurt Coleman, or Kenny Phillips who’s highlight this offseason has been nursing injuries, the Safety position doesn’t look good. Arguably, Earl Wolff has looked the best out of all candidates. This game is crucial as the battle for that final safety spot runs out of time.
In addition, the cornerback position hasn’t looked too promising either. Cary Williams when healthy could basically be an automatic starter on one side, but the thing is he’s missed a lot of practices this offseason due to injury. This game will be important for him to show how much of a factor he can be on the field. On the other hand, you have Brandon Boykin, who has looked great this offseason. He’s worked hard this offseason to improve his game, and to be honest, he has. Problem? He’s too small. The Eagles would much rather use him in the slot than the outside. That being said, who gets the final cornerback spot? This game will be very important in giving insight on to who it might be.
On the other side of the football, we will finally see the offensive line complete! Jason Peters will make his return tonight , as rookie tackle, Lane Johnson will be protecting Michael Vick’s blindside. How will the healthy offensive line we have been waiting to see all season play together?
I know, I know, the quarterback battle is over, but how will Vick perform after being named the starter? Vick feels better than ever, and his passion for football has supposedly return. I assume that Saturday’s game will dictate how that translates onto the playing field.
Oh yeah, remember Jason Babin? He’s in Jacksonville now. That should be fun to watch.
