No, the two parts of that headline are not related. It was a rough night in Boston sports, as all three teams lost and looked bad doing it. The Celtics appear to be at the end of the line, (wait, are they really not better without Rajon Rondo????) the Bruins are disappointing, and Alfredo Aceves and the Red Sox bats both failed to show up last night. Let’s move on… The Globe yesterday officially hired Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post as the replacement for Greg A Bedard, who is departing for Sports Illustrated at the end of this month. So, I guess the cat’s out of the bag. It’s true — Next month I will be leaving the Post to cover the Patriots and NFL for the @bostonglobe — Ben Volin (@BenVolinPBP) April 23, 2013 A Maryland native, Volin has been at the Post for seven years, and has covered the Dolphins for the paper for the last four years. He also covered the Florida Gators football team for two years, making him familiar with several current Patriots. ************ Pete Sheppard ...

Red Sox demote Aceves to AAA, will attempt to trade him

The Red Sox made their second bold move in as many days on Wednesday, optioning struggling righty Alfredo Aceves to AAA Pawtucket following the team's 6-5 victory against the Oakland Athletics. According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox will spend the next 72 hours trying to trade Aceves, who has posted an ugly 8.66 ERA in five games (three starts) so far this...

Last year's Eastern Conference Finals were far from over when the Celtics fell behind 0-2 in Miami

On May 30th of last year Rajon Rondo played the game of his life.  But it wasn't enough, and the Celtics lost Game 2 of the Conference Finals to the Heat, 115-111 in OT.  That put the C's in an 0-2 hole heading back to Boston.  I'll be the first to admit, I had given up.  After watching one of the greatest individual performances I'd ever seen come up just short...

Aceves blames bad start on strike zone

Red Sox pitcher Alfredo Aceves, shelled for seven earned runs in less than four innings, blamed a small strike zone for his terrible outing.

JR Smith: Celtics don’t know what to do without Rajon Rondo

The Boston Celtics have put themselves in a tough spot against the New York Knicks as they head back home. The age of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and company was evident in the first two games of the playoffs, as they were unable to close out games or come up with answers late in the fourth quarter. Fatigue has clearly been a factor, but we must also remember that the Celtics have...

Celtics need to pick up the pace in Game 2

How can the Celtics eliminate some of their sloppy turnovers in half-court sets? By staying out of half-court sets: “Some of those easy opportunities have to come in transition,” said Pierce. “Kicking the ball ahead to myself, Jeff [Green] is something we want to emphasize. We feel like if we can get the ball up and advance passes before the defense, it says it gives us an...

Missing Someone?

After Rajon Rondo went down with his season ending injury, the Celtics immediately won eight consecutive games. Many C's fans started to believe that this Celtics team is better off without #9 and thought Boston would make a similar dramatic mid-season turnaround as they did last season. Honestly, those were the most ridiculous remarks by Celtics fans I've ever heard and...

Red Sox option Alfredo Aceves to minors

The Boston Red Sox optioned pitcher Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A on Wednesday. Aceves had struggled after being moved into the Red Sox rotation for an injured John Lackey. In 17 2/3 innings of work Aceves had a 8.66 ERA and a 2.09 WHIP. After his latest outing he claimed that the strike zone was too small. With the demotion of Aceves the Red Sox promoted catcher Ryan Lavarnway. Lavarnway’s...

Aceves Optioned To Triple-A; Lavarnway Recalled

It looks as though the Alfredo Aceves era with the Boston Red Sox is coming to an end. According to multiple media outlets and first reported by CSN New England, Aceves has been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. He'll have 72 hours to report to PawSox. Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports that catcher Ryan Lavarnway will be called up to replace Aceves on the 25-man...

A's and then nature rain on Red Sox

Alfredo Aceves pitched two strong innings, followed by one disastrous one. Aceves' own mistakes and a few by his teammates piled up quickly as Oakland scored six runs in the third and went on to shut out the Red Sox 13-0 Tuesday night in a game shortened to seven innings because of rain. ''It's not like only one thing. It's couple things,'' Aceves said...

Alfredo Aceves’ Demotion to Triple-A Solely ‘Performance-Based,’ According to Manager John Farrell

Alfredo Aceves has ruffled some feathers in the past, but his demotion to Triple-A Pawtucket has nothing to do with any behavioral issues, according to Red Sox manager John Farrell. Farrell said before Thursday’s game that Aceves’ demotion was “performance-based, solely.” Some may find that hard to believe, but the right-hander has certainly endured his fair share of struggles...

Alfredo Aceves’ Demotion Shows Allen Webster Is Red Sox’ Top Option When Starter Is Needed

Allen Webster’s second big league start could come sooner than expected. Alfredo Aceves was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after Wednesday’s game against the Athletics. That means the Red Sox will be turning elsewhere if John Lackey is unavailable to return for Sunday’s start against the Astros. Webster should make sure his phone is charged, as he’ll likely be the first one...

Dugout Digest - a no good, very bad night

Alfredo Aceves of the Boston Red Sox did not have himself a good night on Tuesday. Aceves' Red Sox lost 13-0 to the A's in seven innings, and Aceves had a historically bad performance. He threw just 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits, walking four, and striking out three. Aceves also balked twice, and committed a throwing error. No pitcher has...

Is Doc Rivers Being Out-Coached?

Coming into the latest Celtics-Knicks series, the internets were ablaze with jokes about Mike Woodson's annual playoff exits for The Hawks and Knicks. However, thanks to some crucial mid-game adjustments, The Knicks now have a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Boston's performance in the first two games has only exacerbated their disappointing year, which began with a slow...

Afternoon Red Sox Delight - 4/23

After winning last night, the Boston Red Sox look to keep the good times going tonight in the second game of a three-game set with the Oakland Athletics at historic Fenway Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. If you live in the Red Sox television market you can catch the game on NESN. If you live in the Athletics television market, you can catch the game on Comcast Sports...
