[caption id="attachment_138" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Everyone is excited for the debut of Mikhail Grigorenko[/caption] By: Derek Wangler The NHL is back and so too are the Buffalo fans. There was a crowd of over 10,000 fans at the First Niagara Center this week to watch the Sabres play, wait for it…themselves. Yep, I’d say the fans are more happy that hockey is back than angry it was gone. There is plenty to be excited about this season but I think all Sabres fans are looking forward to seeing first round pick Mikhail Grigorenko make his debut. At first it was, “Should they keep him on the NHL club or leave him in the QMJHL”? And now with players, coaches, fans, and media members raving about the 18 year-old, people are just wondering how long it will take for their replica jersey to show up. Head coach Lindy Ruff has Grigorenko centering Steve Ott and Ville Leino and I think this line makes a lot of sense. First of all for Grigorenko he gets a grinder type guy in Ott that will watch his back. He also gets Leino, who had a fantastic year two seasons ago when he had Danny Briere as his center. Leino obviously struggled mightily last season for the Sabres but maybe a talented rookie center will help him recapture some of that offensive ability he had in Philadelphia. Leino should also benefit from Steve Ott’s presence as he has been criticized as being one of the softest players in the league. All in all the three different players together just make sense as a line. I’m hearing a lot of people saying that they almost don’t want the Sabres to win the Cup this year because of the shortened season. For all of you who are thinking that way or those who maybe have thought of it but don’t want to say you have, I understand. The city of Buffalo hasn’t won a championship in over 50 years and this would be the time that we finally get one so that people can say it was cheap. However, think about this – you still have to win in the playoffs. Every team has a 48 game season; it’s a level playing field. Regardless of the length of the season it won’t matter, come playoff time you’ll be going Cup crazy like the rest of us. Will Grigorenko be this year’s rookie sensation and help the Sabres capture their first Stanley Cup? Who knows, but the thought alone is definitely worth getting excited about.
