This is Petr Mrazek, who may or may not be the future staring netminder for the Detroit Red Wings. Today he turns 21 years old and can now legally consume vodka-OJs, gamble and hang out with our friend Patrick Kane over the off-seasons. Hit the jump for more birthday cheer. Petr Mrazek has been impressive so far in net for the Wings, and I haven't seen anyone really reach out to the guy in the media to wish him a happy 21st. Which is weird, because this is the internet we are talking about. Where literally anyone can start a blog about anything they want and publish every little teency-tiny thought that's in their mind. Many use this power for evil or to do harm. Myself included. However today I will use the power of the internet to wish Mrazek a happy birthday. And a happy Valentines Day... but not in like, an awkward way or something. Few thoughts from the St. Louis Blues game (because this is the internet... where anyone can say anything)... -Mostly I was disgusted with how the Wings sat back and just allowed the Blues back into that hockey game. Like it or not, St. Louis has too many gamers just to sit back on a quick two goal lead. I don't know how Mike Babcock will approach this situation as the season continues, but I feel like Detroit has only realized that NHL hockey is a 60 minute game once, and that the season has actually started now. -A point is a point though. I'll take that. -Not sure how I am feeling about Mr. Damien Brunner playing the point on the power play. I'm also not sure how I feel about Dan Cleary seeing minutes on the top power play unit. I understand that Franzen is out, and Babcock wants a net prescience. But if Cleary is your first check down for that role then perhaps that's why there are issues with the extra man in the first place. -Regardless as to who has been out there, Detroit has been awful with the extra skater. No news there. It's just surprising to me that the area where I am missing Nick Lidstrom the most currently is on the power play. Also, is it too late to resign Homer? Last I heard he was real anxious to play. Who would have ever though one could miss crosschecks to the back on a nightly basis? -All these things aside, there are a lot of reasons to be hopeful for this team moving forward. Eight of them to be precise. With eight roster players out currently, the Wings are sitting fifth in the Western Conference. There is zero breathing room at the moment as only five points separate Detroit and 15th place Columbus. Yet I feel this is a team on the upswing. -No hot starts because of youth. No jets on the legs like there was something to prove. Just a slow and steady grind up the hill. This season will be just like the playoffs in that teams need to control their highs and lows. Can't get too high, and you can't get to low. So far Detroit has done exactly that. Beat irritation back with a Don Fehr's head-sized mallet for now. Met a guy from Detroit at work today. I asked him if he was a Wings fan and he laughed at me like I told him a joke. He told me that no one up there isn't, and that this team keeps them going. Here's to that. Go Wings.
