WTAE Action Sports' Guy Junker does his best to be upbeat after the Pittsburgh Pirates' surprising season ended after a Game 5 NLDS loss to St. Louis. While recapping the game during a live broadcast outside Busch Stadium, a red-maned female Cardinals fan walks over and tries to give the reporter a gentle kiss on the cheek. Junker handled it like a gentleman and smiled. A kiss meant for all Pirates fans.

Can the Pirates do it again next year?

Midnight struck for baseball’s Cinderella last night, as Adam Wainwright‘s curveball played the part of the wicked stepmother. Actually, I don’t know the Cinderella story well enough to know if that sentence makes sense, so let’s move on from this tortured analogy after just one sentence. The Pirates lost last night, and the season that put the city back on the map as a...

AFL Recap: Tough Day at Plate For Hanson, Benedict Strong in Relief

After playing two night games to open the season against Salt River, the Scottsdale Scorpions moved on to Peoria for a day game Thursday. Scottsdale dropped their second straight game, losing 6-3 today.  Alen Hanson was the only Pittsburgh Pirates player in the starting lineup. He batted lead-off and played shortstop. Hanson struck out in his first AB, then reached on an error in...

Burnett: 'I badly wanted to pitch.'

A.J. Burnett was on the phone shortly before 4 p.m. and he was not happy. He had a right not to be happy. My story questioning Burnett's unavailability for Game 5 last night was wrong. He was unavailable. But not because he wanted to be. I put two and two together and came up with five. I apologized to Burnett and I'm apologizing to the readers. Burnett said between expletives...

The Pirates Won’t Have Problems Attracting Free Agents

Marlon Byrd is a free agent this off-season, and would be a good stopgap until Gregory Polanco is ready. (Photo Credit: David Hague) We’re about a month away from the time when Major League Baseball players are first eligible for free agency. We’re about two months away from the time when those players actually start to sign with teams. So it’s early in the process. But it’s...

Starling Marte makes a fantastic diving grab

Pittsburgh Pirates left fielder Starling Marte made this sensational diving grab during the top of the fourth inning in Game 5 of the Cardinals-Bucs NLDS Game 5. There was nobody on base at the time but Marte’s grab saved what probably would have wound up at least a triple off the bat of the speedy Matt Carpenter. Cards shortstop Pete Kozma made a great diving grab of his own during...

MLB Game Picks - Wednesday: October 9, 2013

After yesterday's games, the Red Sox are in and the Tigers get to fight another day. The Tigers forced a Game 5 with a thrilling (and disputed) win over the Athletics. Yesterday, I speculated on whether Max Scherzer would start instead of Doug Fister. He did not. But Fister was decent and Scherzer did pitch after all and got the win in relief. After all, he got the run support...

WATCH: Cardinals fan tries to kiss Pittsburgh reporter on live TV

The St. Louis Cardinals officially ended the Pittsburgh Pirates' magical season Wednesday night to punch their ticket to the NLCS to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the game, Cardinals fans were understandably giddy as they left the stadium, as evidenced in this short video clip of WTAE reporter Guy Junker trying to relay a report back to Pittsburgh. Junker manages to ignore...

A Minor Review of 2013: Pirates

There is always a bit of a lull between the end of the minor league playoffs in September and the start of the annual top prospects lists in early November. Because of that gap, I’m breathing new life into an old feature that I wrote for the site in FanGraphs’ infancy back in 2008 and 2009. The series ‘A Minor Review of 2013′ will look back on some of the major happenings...

Contract Crowdsourcing 2013-14: A.J. Burnett

Free agency begins five days after the end of the World Series. As in other recent offseasons, FanGraphs is once again facilitating this offseason a contract-crowdsourcing project, the idea being to harness the wisdom of the crowds to the end of better understanding the 2013-14 free-agent market. Note that, this year, in addition to asking readers to estimate the years/dollars each...

Matheny, Hurdle both sticking with a familiar face in leadoff spot for Game 5

ST. LOUIS -- Matt Carpenter isn't the only leadoff hitter struggling in the Pirates-Cardinals National League Division Series. Like Carpenter, Pirates left fielder Starling Marte s 1-for-15, and hasn't been on base in the past two games. Marte, who hit .280.343.441 in the regular season, homered and walked in Game 2 but is 0-for-12 in the other three games. But neither...

Starling Marte Robs Matt Carpenter of Extra-Base Hit With Spectacular Diving Catch (Video)

The Pirates clearly aren’t ready for their magical season to come to an end. Finding themselves down 2-0 in the third inning of Game 5, left fielder Starling Marte came up with a clutch grab to limit the damage. Cardinals second baseman Matt Carpenter ripped a Gerrit Cole fastball down the left field line, but Marte robbed a sure extra-base hit from Carpenter, diving toward the...

Proud to be a Fan of these Pirates

The saying goes that “All great things must come to an end.” Only one team makes it to the top of the mountain with the trophy, while 29 others are still climbing. And when it comes to the amazing 2013 Pittsburgh Pirates season it would come to end short of the mountain peak. It’s okay…

Like Penguins, Bucs Still Have Work To Be Done

PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates may be out the playoffs already – c'mon, they lost to a team they were up in the series 2-1 on, really? – but at least one Pittsburgh team won this baseball season. Yep, you guessed it – the Penguins. Now that the Pirates have gone belly-up in the playoffs for the first time in one year in the Andrew McCutchen era, maybe we'll hear...

Cardinals fan tries to kiss Pittsburgh Pirates anchorman

Yesterday was a tough time to be a Pirates fan after the St. Louis Cardinals eliminated Pittsburgh in Game 5 of the NLDS. WTAE reporter Guy Junker was reporting on Wednesday night’s events when a red-headed Cardinals fan attempted to land on kiss on Junker’s cheek.  Well done by Junker to play it off cool and get through the segment pretty much unscathed.

NLDS Game 5 Preview: Pirates vs. Cardinals

Pirates at Cardinals–Series Tied 2-2 8:00 PM–Busch Stadium, St Louis MLB.com Gameday TV: TBS For the second time in just over a week, the season comes down to one game. (That Wild Card game feels like it was a while ago now, right?) The Bucs spoiled us in that one by taking an early lead and not looking back — after the second inning, their win probablity never dipped below...
