This post may be for me and cycledan only but I hate baseball and don’t feel like writing about it. So instead I’m writing a preview of the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup.

There were a couple notable upsets in group play but for the most part the expected teams advanced through and now we have some real good matchups, oddly enough with the northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere each playing amongst themselves.

Ireland vs Wales: Ireland has looked very strong so far with an unexpected win over Australia and going undefeated through group play. Wales managed to get 2nd in their group, fending off a strong Samoa team and almost beating South Africa as well. This game is going to be a defensive struggle. Ireland is a 2 point favorite and I tend to agree that they are just the slightest bit better. Prediction: Ireland 17 Wales 12.

England vs France: As expected England cruised through their group undefeated. France meanwhile snuck out 2nd place in their group just barely and was humiliated in defeat to a determined Tonga side. Much like the soccer world cup, the French team is in shambles and the coach has lost control. England is only favored by 4 in this match, but I don’t see it being that close. The French defense is in tatters. Prediction: England 27 France 10.

South Africa vs Australia: What a matchup between 2 former multiple world cup winners. Australia was upset by Ireland and is surely the best team that finished 2nd in their group. South Africa meanwhile is the defending champion and rolled through their group. While South Africa is definitely not quite as good as they were in 2007, they are still a bit better than Australia this year. The oddsmakers have Australia as a 1 point favorite but I disagree. Prediction: South Africa 20 Australia 16.

New Zealand vs Argentina: Argentina was lucky to beat out Scotland for 2nd in their group while host nation New Zealand has not disappointed in winning all their games so far by at least 20 points. This game is big time mismatch as New Zealand is favored by 25. Prediction: New Zealand 38 Argentina 13.

MLB Playoffs:

5:07 TBS Philadelphia at St. Louis (Hamels vs Garcia) Series tied at 1.

8:37 TBS New York at Detroit (Burnett vs Porcello) Detroit leads 2-1.

9:37 TNT Milwaukee at Arizona (Marcum vs Collmenter) Milwaukee leads 2-0.
