When former George Mason coach Jim Larranaga left a couple years ago to take the same position at Miami I believed he was making a terrible decision. Why leave a school where you were a legend, and were starting to build into one of the top mid-major programs in the country? I understood that conference wise, going from the CAA to the ACC was a major step up, but I didn’t feel the Miami basketball program was that much better than Mason’s. Miami has next to no basketball history, and I thought that Larranaga, despite being an excellent coach, would perenially get beaten by Duke and North Carolina. However, in his second year, Larranaga has the Canes at 8-0 in the ACC, with impressive wins at Carolina and at home against Duke. His team is senior laden which helps, but these same guys weren’t doing much under Frank Haith. Larranaga’s success would make Mason fans wonder what might have been already, but making it worse has been the struggles Mason has gone through.
