As all yall know, I'm not exactly hopping on the Wandy bandwagon. I've been his biggest fan for years now, even when I thought he'd only be a serviceable #4 guy. But he's been even better than I dared dream, really, starting in 07 when he decided to stop the nibbling crap, throw his FB for strikes and gained exquisite command of that hellacious curve. He was hurt last year and was on the DL twice, so his overall numbers weren't up there (and believe it or not, Brandon Backe was the ONLY Astros starter not to miss even one start all year last year.) He's most certainly moved to Ace status this year. Here are his numbers: 20 starts, 14 QS over 125.2 IP (6.0 - 6.1 IP/GS): 113 H, 22 doubles, 1 triple (because of fer #*$^! fielding) 13 HR, 42 BB, 117 K: That is 8.1 H/9, 1.1 HR/9, 3 BB/9, 8.5 K/9. 2.72 ERA/1.23 WHIP/.244 BAA/.688 OPS. He's hit 3 batters, allowed only 1 SB and has 1 CS. Here's the breakdown of his games: 9 IP - 1 game, 0 R - W8 IP - 1 game, 0 R - W7 IP - 8 games, 0 ER(W), 5 games with 1 ER(W), 1 ER(ND), 3R/2 ER(W)6 IP - 5 games, 0 ER(W), 1 ER(ND), 1 ER(L), 3 ER(L), 4 ER(ND) 5 IP - 2 games, 3 ER(ND), 7 ER(L) 4-4.2 IP - 3 games, 7 ER(L), 2 games with 6 R(L) He got 2 L and 2 ND in 4 of his QS and another ND in which he gave up 3 ER over 5 IP. That is not real too good run support. He also didn't win a single game in which he pitched poorly, so he is essentially winning only games in which he pitches 7 innings and gives up 0 or 1 runs - he has only won ONE game in which he gave up more than 1 run. So he is basically winning without team support. And as for all those people who believe he is no ace, let's look at his stats, comparing him to all the other starters in the entire majors, not just the NL, who have started at least 18 G or have thrown over 120 IP: ERA: 2.72 - 7th (yes, in the entire freaking ML)WHIP: 1.23 - tied for 26thK: tied with Beckett and Santana for 11th with 117K/9 IP: 8.38 - 12thIP: 125.2 - 23rd QS: 14 - tied with Lilly, Santana and Marquis for 11thGIDPs - 16 - tied with 5 other guys So, seeing as how there are 30 major league teams, and Wandy is in the top 30 in bout every category you can think of, I need an explanation as to how he is not an out and out ace. smile At least 2/3 of the way through the season...
