Trevor Hoffman, MLB’s all-time saves leader with 601 saves, announced his retirement today.Stealing a page from the “How To Make Nice With The Team That Made You Famous” book written and annotated by John Smoltz and Tom Glavine, Hoffman said it was time to put all the acrimony between him and the Padres behind and to move on. And move on he will, right into some as-yet-undefined role with the team (sound familiar?; I told you Glavine was an author of the book!).
And in an unrelated observation, Billy Wagner remains on the 40 man roster of the Atlanta Braves. Hmmm. It would seem that he could have made time for that “formality” by now. Just imagine our pen with Wagner there for another year! Imagine Wren running around like the proverbial chicken looking for a place to cut budget (and blasting himself for the contracts with Linebrink and Sherrill!). I know it’s not likely to happen, but it’s kind of fun to think about.
