The All-Star Game is pointless. It's not only worthless, it's actually detrimental, in my opinion. I detailed it in a column a few years ago, but essentially:
• Putting the fate of the classification of "All-Star" (that once carried such importance and pride with it) in the hands of people voting 35 times apiece with each of their email addresses leads to the game being a popularity contest instead of an acknowledgement of accomplishment. Carlos Gomez and Jean Segura totally deserved to be there. Others, not so much.
• Having the game in the middle of the season is flawed, as the Al...

MLB All-Star Week first-half highlights week takes us to the number two highlight. The theme of these highlights is defense. Believe it or not there hasn’t been a lot of offensive thrillers in the first-half of the season.
The top two highlights on this countdown are ridiculous catches. Carlos Gomez’s game-saving home run robbery comes in at number 2. Why number 2? Well – the...
It's been awhile since I stole the Best and Worst gimmick from someone else (since the good times in fact,) but I felt this particular season was in more need of it than any before. After all, what season could be in need of some positivity more than this one? Put it this way, I debated with myself all morning on whether or not it should be called 'the Worst and Worst.'...
There’s a strange situation going on in Milwaukee, and we’re not referring to Ryan Braun’s perpetual problems with the league office. The Brewers have, top to bottom, one of the best and most talented lineups in the National League. They have the fourth-lowest bullpen ERA in baseball, at 2.97. And yet they’re 38-56, the second-worst team in the NL and one of the game’s...
After dealing with poor starting pitching, key injuries and plenty of rumors regarding a possible Ryan Braun drug suspension, the Milwaukee Brewers are hoping their second half goes better than the first.
The improving Miami Marlins have the same goal.
Braun is expected to return Friday night when the NL's two worst teams return from the All-Star break in Milwaukee.
Imagine what was going through the head of Jean Segura when he stepped to the plate in the eighth inning of Tuesday night's All-Star Game at Citi Field.
Not only was the 23-year-old appearing in his first All-Star Game, but Segura had just witnessed one of the best moments in the history of the annual game.
As the top of the eighth inning ended, the bullpen gate swung open...
After four days off, the Miami Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers will open the second half against one another in Milwaukee. Miami finished the first half by knocking off the Washington Nationals in two of three games and by winning 22 of 39 games overall. Milwaukee won on Sunday to avoid being swept by the Arizona [...]

There really isn't a frontrunner for the NL MVP award. And honestly, I don't think there really should be. David Wright leads the league in fWAR, but he plays for a terrible team. Carlos Gomez is second in the league in fWAR, and that value is based primarily on his defensive superiority. The players with the league's three highest wOBAs all play in hitters parks. So...
Juan Francisco and Carlos Gomez each hit home runs and Kyle Lohse blanked Miami for six innings as the Milwaukee Brewers started the second half of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Marlins on Friday night.
Lohse (6-7) has owned the Marlins over his career. He came in 5-2 in nine starts, including a 3-0 record with the St. Louis Cardinals last season. He was in command all...
