HOW MUCH REAL COMPETITION IS ON THE DEFENSE?

Posted July 20, 2013

EVERY position is up for grabs right? Really? Let's look at that. And naturally if the guy I projected is injured in Camp, he won't be the starter. So if a guy goes on IR, don't come at me with some dumb s*** like "Look like yew wuz wrowng, Purdy Burdy". Have some dignity.

This is going to be a 3-4 unit so we'll start at NT with starter Issac Sopoaga. The Eagles aren't going pay Soap 3.75 mil to just watch the game. He may eventually be surpassed by rookie Bennie Logan at some point in the season, but Soap will be your Week One starter. At DE we're married to Fletcher Cox until at least 2015 for financial reasons alone. Throw in the fact that there isn't another natural 3-4 DE talent on the roster and BOOM! Instant starter. The other DE spot is actually up for grabs, although Cedric Thorton seems to be the guy they WANT to win it.

LINEBACKER! On the Outside (I'm thinking SLB) will be Connor Barwin because he's the only OLB that they CONSIDER an OLB who may be able to hold up in coverage. WLB, will likely be Trent Cole. There is a looooot of work being put into teaching that old dog some new tricks. Seems silly when we know that Barwin at WLB and Kendricks at SLB would be legit right there. But no, at 5 mil this season and being that Cole would be a pricey cut for the next couple years, he's going to be made to work for a living in. At least 2013. Inside DeMeco Ryans and Mychal Kendricks are almost unchallenged.

So that's 6 of your Front 7. Now for Secondary.

Anyone care to dispute Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher at CB? As if money weren't enough of a motivator, lets look at the talent behind them. Unfinished Reid/Castillo RB turned CB project Curtis Marsh; Brandon "Toast II" Hughes; Brandon Boykin; and Jordan Poyer. For those who don't watch Rams games (I KEEP Steven Jackson on my fantasy teams), here's a link http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1573717-what-the-philadelphia-eagles-should-expect-from-new-cornerback-bradley-fletcher

At Safety I've heard/read Patrick Chung at FS and Nate Allen at SS, I've also heard/read Patrick Chung at SS and Kenny Phillips at FS. Patrick Chung seems regardless of where he plays Chung seems like a safe bet. The last spot seems genuinely up for grabs.

Let's review!

DE:Cox

NT: Sopoaga

DE:? (Thornton)

SLB: Barwin

ILB: Ryans

ILB: Kendricks

WLB: Cole

FS: Chung

SS:?

CB: Fletcher

CB: Williams

That's 9 starters named PRIOR to camp opening with only 2 spots up for grabs, though 1 spot already has a favorite.

I could be wrong. Let's see how it shakes out.

  • I'm not doubting u with this but there are changes I would make to the d that I have stated before. Mostly the LBs. like u said barwin n Kendrick's outside should be a no brainer. Then we go Chaney n ryans inside. I seem to be the only one who thinks Logan has the body of a 3-4 de not a nt. earl wolff is starting for me with a decent camp along with Phillips/Allen rotating those two as they come off n back on the injured list. Ph#ck Williams. We may be stuck with him but he's a b!tch. Fletcher we shall see, he has promise. I wanna see poyer play some safety and fight for the nickel spot. Anyone who truly thinks boykins was good last year is only remembering the first two weeks and the last couple. Majority of the seasons teams found ways to expose him greatly.
  • I'm not sure WHAT to make of Logan at this point.
If you watch tape of him:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpLIcE5cqtY
    and
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcgwiqI3eoE ,

what you'll see is REMARKABLY unremarkable player. I have no idea why he went so high, but I haven't harped on it, because 1) it was a 3rd rounder not a 1st rounder, and 2) there's enough talent ahead of him to make a bad pick at DT not hurt as much.

I also see Poyer as a Safety prospect. Too often in the Nickel you have to play over that slot, and Poyer is better with a cushion.
  • I figure at de he can at least be a gap control run stuffer that every 3-4 team needs. This would allow barwin n Kendricks (in my defense) the ability to rush easier having a massive line of everyone around 300lbs or more. Also help keep the ILB free from guards on runs. Also helps keep qbs like rg3 from getting out. Look at what the ravens did to ck in the Super Bowl. They switched to a 4-3 to help with gap control n he was forced to beat him with his arm. Something he almost did Cary Williams.
  • Did you see the videos? He was repeatedly OUT OF gaps, and got almost no push at the point of attack. I don't know, I'm sure they watched a LOT more tape than those video's provide, but I just don't get it.
  • Yea I did and I would say the only time he was out of position was as a NT atleast from what I seen. As a DE he was good not great but good. As a 4-3 DT he was good too. A couple times he got pushed back but for the most part he was able to hold his own vs someone u already declared a future hall of famer in chance warmack. He doesn't need to be a pro bowl player. I just need him to be in the offenses way.
  • I'll back off...
  • Joe mays cut. Should the eagles make a play??????
  • Nah. I just went and looked him up and...Nah.

You know who NFL Network did an offseason workout story on? Casey Matthews. When I saw that yesterday it got my attention. Between Ryans, Kendricks, Chaney (the forgotten man by many) and possibly Matthews, we could be crazy deep at ILB.

You know, Left to Right: Kendricks, Ryans, Matthews, and Chaney is good enough as a starting 4 right there.
  • Hate Matthews. He's too slow by far and having him next to Ryans doubles the poor coverage. I know it's different in the 3-4 and he wouldn't be getting burnt by backs down the sideline but his instincts n speed allowed Brandon Jacobs to burn him. He's gotta prove he can play again.

And yea I was just joking about mays. He had one decent year. I would still like to see them add an ILB since it seems Chaney is destined for a back up role as Kendricks is used out of place.
  • I'd be willing to gamble on Jason Phillips. (I know, I'm a real geek for looking that deep at the Eagles roster.) He's a Special Teamer as far as kick coverage AND he's an experienced long snapper too boot.
  • If he can play and long snap than bye bye magic man. I've been meaning to check Phillips out I'm interested in what Damian square can do for the de spot. That's my biggest concern on the team. Just cause it seems we have no answer for that. Atleast they don't wanna do the obvious things. Also starting to watch Kruger. If he can play around 280-295 he can be a beast for us like Justin smith is in San Fran.
  • No, no, no! KEEP Dorenbos!

I'm saying we should keep Phillips. He's a reserve LS, and it doesn't hurt if he plays ST and has a couple of starts (2) on Defense under his belt.

Like the game where Chad Johnson ended up kicking an extra point (He was Cincy's back-up Kicker), it helps to have depth at the specialist positions, and it helps even more if you don't have to add an extra specialist (which wastes a roster spot) to do it.
