HOW SPREAD ARE OUR OPTIONS?

Posted December 30, 2012

ASSUMING the Eagles (all caps end with the season as is my tradition) land Chip Kelly, (because Steve Sarkisian is a .500 collegiate coach) what are the odds that he brings the Spread Option with him? I think the Packers and Bills run it, but unless you have an Aaron Rodgers type who is accurate and can also threaten with his legs, the system is not without it's drawbacks in the NFL.

I know collegiate level coaches love to run the Spread Option, but what works down there can spell disaster up here. Especially if you lack the players to run it correctly in the first place. As of right now our QB is Nick Foles. As much as I think Aaron Rodgers is a bit of a douche bag, Nick Foles (as an athlete) is no Aaron Rodgers. In fact, the only QB on the roster even half qualified to run it is Michael Vick (accuracy not being his strong suit.) Cue sinister music.

If we don't keep Vick then we'll need to trade for a franchise QB. The next best name on the list is Joe Flacco, but he's no Option QB.  And FA isn't exactly teeming with any that will fit this need. Well Tarvaris Jackson can run. Jason Campbell can run. Matt Moore...You get my point.

So here is my question: What other answers do you see to solve this dilemma?
