The Hurricanes won 2-1 in a shootout for their first win of the season. Sergei Samsonov and Tuomo Ruutu scored in the shootout. The Canes took their first lead of the season on Jussi Jokinen's power-play goal at 13:12 of the first and it was 1-0 after the opening period. Joni Pitkanen, in his first game, got the primary assist, with Cam Ward also getting an assist. Jokinen, on a breakaway, attempted a backhander that Lightning goalie Mike Smith got a piece of, only to have the puck slip under his pads and ease over the goal line. The Canes kept the pressure on Smith after the goal, with Ray Whitney and Chad LaRose getting off good shots. The Canes killed off their first penalty, a cross-checking call against Joe Corvo, before they drew a hooking call on Vinny LeCavalier after a flurry in front of the Tampa goal.
