Photo: Associated Press BOSTON--  The difference is quite interesting, almost staggering. The differences in the overall performance of the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins in this series are noticeable, but within the category of performances lies an interesting subplot. The goaltending in this series provides a stark contrast, and this contrast has undoubtedly helped the Black and Gold gain a substantial edge over their Steel City adversaries. On the Penguins’ bench lies uncertainty. Tomas Vokoun had been the replacement for Marc-Andre Fleury ever since Fleury’s meltdown against the Islanders , but after giving up three goals in 16:31 total ice time Monday evening, it was the former number one overall pick sliding back into the crease. He did not fare much better either, also allowing three goals in 43:24 total ice time.  This was the first time in the series that Pittsburgh’s goaltending “broke” per say. Vokoun “bended” slightly in Game One Saturday night, allowing three goa...

Penguins: Bylsma Chooses Vokoun, Fleury Out for Good?

As the Pittsburgh Penguins finished their morning skate at the TD Garden today, Tomas Vokoun was the first goaltender off of the ice. Traditionally, this means that he will be between the pipes for this game three of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Bruins. Good call? Bad call? Good call. Though a goaltending [...]

Vokoun to start Game 3, why this may be the end of Marc Andre Fleury

Vokoun is in for Game 3, Marc-Andre Fleury may be out in Pittsburgh forever. Is that over the top? Maybe. But think about what is going on. Down 2-0, and in their biggest game of the season the Pens aren't starting their number one goalie.   And, they aren't wrong about it. The goaltending change the other night was not the same as Fleury getting his job back...

Eklund: Vokoun Starts 3. Is Fleury Done in Pitt? Could he be moved for Ryan Miller?

Vokoun is back in goal tonight and this has to raise several questions. Does this mean that Marc Andre Fleury is essentially done in Pittsburgh? The team will say all the right things here, but you can't help but think the Penguins and Fleury are on their last leg right now. The only way I could see the team really going back to MA Fleury next season would be under a new...

Who’s in net? It doesn’t really matter, the Penguins have much bigger problems to solve

Let’s put it to bed: Tomas Vokoun is the Pittsburgh Penguins starting goaltender. He is, he was, and he should be. At no point in Game 2 did Marc-Andre Fleury prove that it should be any different. Yes, Vokoun is pretty average, but considering Fleury is less than that, Vokoun is the guy who gives the Pens the best chance to win and turn this series around. End of discussion. The...

Tomas Vokoun to start for Penguins in Game 3 tonight

It looks like Penguins coach Dan Bylsma will likely stick with Tomas Vokoun in net for the opening puck drop of tonight’s Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals in Boston. Both Vokoun, who started games one and two, and Marc-Andre Fleury remained on the ice after all skaters finished morning skate at the TD Garden Wednesday, but Vokoun was the first of the goaltenders to exit...

Game 3 ECF, Pittsburgh At Boston

Tomas Vokoun starts in goal again for the Penguins and must be on his game if the Penguins want to skate away with a victory tonight. The Bruins plan to do more of the same and with a win, will be one victory away from the Stanley Cup Final. Puck drops just after 8:00pm ET on NBCSN, CBC and RDS.

Tomas Vokoun will start tonight and the Bruins are salivating

Photo via Boston.comScott LevesqueContent ManagerI can only imagine what was going through the mind of Tomas Vokoun as he sat bewildered on the Pittsburg bench. Confused by the barrage of gold and black flying through his crease like the B's were invited to an open house, Vokoun had no response to the Bruins attack on Monday night and was subsequently pulled by Pittsburg coach...

The Cultural Issues of the Penguins by @highheelshockey

We know how terrible the defense has been. We know how lazy the back-checking has been. We know how utterly pathetic the power play has been. We know that Marc-Andre Fleury has become the pariah of the Penguins organization. We know that Sidney Crosby is still stuck back in the Ottawa series, searching for his way to the Boston series. But issues of the x’s and o’s and effort...

Bylsma: “I’m sticking with Vokoun”

Tomas Vokoun will remain the starter for the Penguins in Game 3 (courtesy of ESPN.com) If someone would have told me  before the  Eastern Conference Finals started that the Pittsburgh Penguins would be down 2-0 in the  series against the Boston Bruins, I personally would have been a bit surprised. But if that same person would have told me that the same Penguins would only have...

Defense Wins Championships

Everyone has heard the mantra. Well, everyone except the Pittsburgh Penguins apparently. It has been a bloodbath for the Pens thus far at home and defensive breakdowns have handed a two game lead for the Bruins. Photo Credit: Associated Press Dan Bylsma would not have guessed that his team would be outscored 9-1 in the first two games, but I would bet he would be even more shocked...

Heart-Stopping Play That Ends in Double Overtime Captured in Best Images From Instant Classic Game 3 of Eastern Conference Finals (Photos)

The Bruins and Penguins might not have looked very evenly matched through the first two games of the Eastern Conference finals, but that changed in a big way for Game 3. The two teams needed double overtime to determine a winner, where Patrice Bergeron beat Tomas Vokoun to stake Boston to a 3-0 series lead after one of the most hard-fought victories in recent memory. In a game full...

Vokounamatata. It means no wins for the first two games. BRUINS WIN!

- Brad Marchand was unreal last night. First he opened the game with scoring a goal at the 26 second mark. If I could, I would personally thank Sidney Crosby for that turnover which lead to the Marchand goal.  And as great as that goal was, the second one was even better. Marchand starts chirping Cooke, gets Cooke's defenses down and then takes off on a rush and scores...

Stanley Cup Playoffs: Eastern Conference Final – Game 2 – Penguins vs. Bruins.

6 to 1. That was the final score of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals and, unfortunately, for Penguins fans, that 6 did not favour Pittsburgh. The initial response when I sat down to write this recap was as follows:   “Boston scored. That’s all. 6 times. Oh. And Brandon Sutter got one and we saw Fleury. Chara is tall, Ference is a granola bar and Marchand likes to slewfoot...

Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins – Game Three

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that Game Three is a monumental game for both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Boston Bruins. The Penguins are down 0-2 in the Eastern Conference Finals heading into Game Three and are looking for any signs of life to get back on track tonight in Boston. Though he was yanked from Game Two after giving up three goals in the first period...

Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins Face Do Or Die Situation

The Pittsburgh Penguins come into tonight’s game with nothing left to lose. Win and live to play another day. Lose and go home. It’s do or die and there’s no room for error. Pick your cliche. Regardless, the Penguins have a monumental task at hand as they need to win the next four games to advance, something that’s only been done three other times in the history of the NHL...
