Welcome to the latest edition of the Indy Ball Weekly Perspective. The Baltimore Orioles have signed Can-Am League Rookie of the Year Cam Kneeland to a minor league contract. Kneeland went undrafted out of the University of Massachusetts Lowell, but left the school as the all-time leader in average (.325), doubles, (44) and RBI (144). In his first full season with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles, he led the team in a variety of categories that included; average (.306), at-bats, (372), hits (114), doubles (29), and RBI (62), and was top three in the league in five offensive categories. 2013 all-star shortstop Pat McKenna will be returning to the Normal Cornbelters, according to a Frontier League press release. McKenna was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 27th round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Bryant College. McKenna did not find much success while spending time with the Tigers and San Diego Padres organizations, but playing regularly has sure brought him out of his shell. According the FL, McKenna led the CornBelters in doubles (19), triples (5), RBI (60), and home runs (18). His home runs, triples and RBI placed him in the top ten in the league in those respective categories. Never afraid to change things up and test the boundaries of what is considered "normal", the Can-Am League has adopted the same extra-innings tiebreaker rules as the International Baseball Federation. I will be watching closely to see of the other independent leagues adopt the same policy, in the meantime, it will be interesting to see how this plays out over the course of a full season. Please find below the details, courtesy of the Can-Am League press release; "Beginning in the 11th inning, the player in the batting order immediately preceding that inning's leadoff hitter will be placed on second base. The inning will otherwise proceed as usual, with each team getting a turn at bat. Should the player starting the inning on second base eventually score, it will count in statistics as a run for the player and an RBI for the batter who drove him in (if applicable), but it will not count towards the pitcher’s earned-run average."  Devon is the Founder and Executive Director of The GM's Perspective.
