PLAYERS: Kelly Olynyk
TEAMS: Gonzaga Bulldogs
1. St. Mary's junior Stephen Holt was injured in the 6th game of the season, and then sat out the next four. Since his return he's struggled a bit, mostly coming off the bench. But he earned the start vs Gonzaga, and almost single handedly brought the Gaels back from a 20-point 2nd half deficit.  In a four-minute stretch (beginning with 15:07 on the clock) Holt scored 13 points and cut the Zags lead to eight. For the game he tied his career high with 23 points. 2. The Gaels picked a bad night to have one of their worst shooting nights of the year. They entered the game making 40% of their 3s on the year, but only hit 26% vs Gonzaga. It was just the second time this year they've been below 30% in a game. 3. All night the announcers were talking about the dominance of the Gonzaga bigs - and with good reason as they scored at will. Overlooked however was that they allowed St. Mary's to stay in the game with their failure to rebound. St. Mary's grabbed 16 offensive boards. On those 16 possessions the Gaels were able to extend, they scored 20 points. In league play the Zags have now allowed three straight opponents to grab more than 40% of their own misses. In out-of-conference play that never happened a single time. 4. Kelly Olynyk continued his campaign for WCC Player of the Year and potential All-American. He scored 31 points on 11-19 shooting, and grabbed 8 rebounds. It was his 2nd 30+ point game this year, and he's the first Zag to do that since Adam Morrison. 5. Gonzaga won 83-78 in a 67 possession game. The 1.24 points per possession scored by Gonzaga was the most this year against St. Mary's, and the most against any St. Mary's team since a loss to Gonzaga two years ago.

Saint Mary's loses 83-78 to No. 9 Gonzaga

Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett figured his veteran team wouldn't need any halftime pep talks at this point in the season. He was wrong. The Gaels trailed No. 9 Gonzaga by 18 points at halftime on Thursday night, then made a furious comeback in the second half before finally losing 83-78. ''We're way too experienced,'' Bennett said. Saint Mary's (Cal)-Gonzaga Preview

Gonzaga beat up on Saint Mary's for more than a decade, but that's hardly been the case over the last few years. Looking to avenge a loss in last season's West Coast Conference title game, the No. 9 Bulldogs try to slow down Matthew Dellavedova and the visiting Gaels in an early season showdown Thursday night. Since winning 28 of 31 matchups from 1999-2010, Gonzaga...
