MIAMI -- Moments after a player gets his first major-league hit, the baseball traditionally gets tossed to the dugout to become a keepsake. Very often, one of the player's teammates then will hurl another ball into the stands as a joke, trying to put a scare into the rookie. Not so Friday night, when Miami's Jake Marisnick singled hard in the sixth inning to snap a career-opening 0-for-14 skid. "No," Marisnick said when asked if a Marlins player attempted the gag. "They noticed I went through enough. It took a little longer than expected." Perhaps in time, but not in timeliness. Marisnick's first career hit helped the Marlins score their first run in a 2-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "I think he's going to be able to sleep tonight, and me too,'" Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "I told him, 'I haven't slept in three days trying to figure out how to get you a hit.' " Left fielder Christian Yel...

Marlins' Marcell Ozuna to have surgery on injured thumb

Miami Marlins outfielder Marcell Ozuna was placed on the major league disabled list with a left thumb injury Thursday, three days after the team optioned him to Double-A Jacksonville. Instead of joining Jacksonville of the Southern League, Ozuna flew from Colorado to Miami to see a hand specialist. The diagnosis was a ligament tear and avulsion fracture. He was placed on the 15-day...

Jake Marisnick ends hitless slump at home against Pirates

MIAMI (AP) -- Miami Marlins rookie Jake Marisnick returned from his first major-league trip with his career average still at .000. The 22-year-old center fielder went 0-for-12 in his first three big-league games in Colorado, but he remained in the starting lineup Friday against Pittsburgh for the start of a homestand. And he finally got his first hit -- a single in the sixth inning...

Logan Morrison Wins Twitter For The Day

The Miami Marlins are a young team with a payroll that is the rough equivalent to one Vernon Wells and one Hiroki Kuroda. The Marlins are also not playing that terrible lately, posting a 24-21 record since June. They have some young, lively arms and some solid offensive pieces that may just turn this team into a contender sooner than everybody thinks. Logan Morrison is a key cog...

DENVER (AP) -- Rob Brantly scored on a wild pitch to break up a scoreless game in the eighth inning, Donovan Solano homered in a four-run ninth, and the Miami Marlins overcame a 93-minute rain delay to beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Thursday. Alvarez, Marlins shutout Pirates 2-0

Placido Polanco's pinch-hit bases-loaded RBI infield single was ugly but lucky for him and the Marlins style doesn't factor on the scoreboard. The end-of-the-bat 50-foot ground-ball to third cracked a scoreless deadlock and lifted the Marlins to a 2-0 win over Pittsburgh Friday night at Marlins Park. The Marlins (39-62) were sparked by a second-straight stellar start from...

Jeff Locke takes on the Marlins

The Marlins got shut out in three consecutive games after the All-Star Break, but then bounced back by taking three of four from the Rockies. They're not a very good team, but at this point they are a very young team and they will cause problems for the Pirates if the Pirates start looking ahead to the big Cardinal series looming at PNC Park next week. Tonight, Jeff Locke...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Miami Marlins – Game 102

The most exciting thing during last night’s game was the twitter rumor that reliever Brian Wilson was spotted at the Pittsburgh Airport.  I’m a huge fan of a Brian Wilson deal, especially with an open spot on the 40 man roster.  No lose situation. Who knows if it’s true or not but that game was…
