Jarvis Jones is considered a true linebacker and due to his ability for making bone-shattering tackles during his time at Georgia, Jones is sometimes referred to as "Dawg Bones" Jones. Coming out of college as a 'true' linebacker gives Jones the advantage of snaring the staring outside liebacker job away from fourth year LB James Worilds. The Steelers prefer to take an college defensive end smaller in size and coach them as a 3-4 linebacker. However, Jones won’t have to make the switch and it could accelerate the learning process and  that he could be ready as a rookie to start. The biggest variable is instincts, and the Steelers say Jones has a nose for making plays. “He’s got (linebacker) instincts,” defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau said, via Len Pasquarelli of the National Football Post. “You don’t have to (wean) him off the end stuff.” Pasquarelli writes: ‘Pittsburgh coaches and officials weren’t exactly thrilled when first-round linebacker Jarvis Jones showed up for early offseason workouts with a hamstring injury, a problem that cropped up, he said, during his “pro day” at Georgia, and which caused him to miss some field-time with the Steelers. But the team has seen enough of the 17th overall pick since then to privately acknowledge that he could be that rarest of commodities: a rookie who actually starts for the Steelers at the prized outside linebacker spot.’
