Right fielder Jay Bruce has always been a streaky hitter, and his latest streak netted him the National League Player of the Week award. Bruce hit .476 with four home runs and 10 RBI for the week. He has home runs in his last four games. It is Bruce's fourth Player of the Week honor. Bruce led the majors in slugging percentage (1.143) and total bases (24). He was second in the NL with 10 RBI and a .542 on-base percentage. His home run Sunday in the eighth inning was the difference in the Reds' 6-5 victory over the Houston Astros. "It's always good when you come through for your team like that, but obviously I wasn't the only part of that comeback," Bruce said. "We're never out of it." Bruce has a team-leading seven home runs, and his batting average is up to .296. True to his streaky nature, Bruce started the year well, then went a career-worst 0-for-19. His goal since spring training has been to be a little more consistent. "I just attribute it to the work I'm doing, just seeing the ball and having time to make a decision," Bruce said. NOTES, QUOTESCairo getting close to a return --INF Miguel Cairo (strained left hamstring) is eligible to some off the disabled list today. He has been running and hitting without trouble for about a week. Cairo was 1-for-9 on the season before he got hurt. --LHP Bill Bray got hit around a bit Sunday in his first rehab outing for Class AAA Louisville, allowing two runs on three hits in one inning. Bray is dealing with groin strain he sustained in spring training. --RHP Andrew Brackman continues to struggle with his control for Class AAA Louisville. He walked five and threw three wild pitches in his lone inning Monday. He threw 34 pitches, only eight of which were strikes. In five starts this season, Brackman is 1-3 with a 9.87 ERA. --RHP Johnny Cueto's ERA over the last two season is 2.15 -- the lowest in baseball. Cueto fell six innings short of qualifying for ERA title in 2011. His 2.31 would have been second to that of NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw. --RHP Bronson Arroyo tries to record his second win of the season Tuesday night when the Reds open a series against the Cubs at Great American Ball Park. Arroyo has only allowed four earned runs on 20 13 innings in his last three starts. BY THE NUMBERS: .361 -- OF Chris Heisey's career average as a pinch-hitter. After singling on Sunday to set up Joey Votto's game-tying two-run double, Heisey is 22-for-61 with six home runs and 20 RBI, including 3-for-4 this season. QUOTE TO NOTE: "The way we started was really ugly. It was a shock to everybody. It was humbling, but I think it was a good thing, too. I'm a firm believer in that, while you don't want to start bad, it doesn't hurt. It makes you concentrate on fundamentals. I think a losing record early in the year can be a good thing." -- 1B Joey Votto, on the Reds finishing April at .500 (11-11) after losing eight of their first 12. ROSTER REPORTMEDICAL WATCH: --LHP Bill Bray (strained left groin) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He began a rehab assignment with Class AAA Louisville on April 29. --INF Miguel Cairo (strained left hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 15. He took batting practice April 25, and he could be activated during the week of April 30-May 6. --RHP Nick Masset (right shoulder inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 26. He had an MRI of his arm April 25, and he could be cleared to throw in early May. --RHP Ryan Madson (Tommy John surgery in April 2012) went on the 60-day disabled list April 4. He is out for the season.
