The vetoed Chris Paul trade changed the Los Angeles Lakers forever and their fans will always wonder “what if?’ – well, at least until the purple and gold win another championship, that is. When the Lakers had come to an agreement with the New Orleans Hornets, the owners of rival teams had just agreed on the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, meaning there would be no lockout. However, they weren’t happy that just minutes after agreeing on a new deal – which was meant to help the smaller market teams – the Lakers were back at their old tricks once again and had just snagged yet another franchise-changing player. According to an excerpt from her re-released book Laker Girl, which was published on ESPN today, Jeanie Buss feels that if the CP3 deal had been agreed upon 24 to 48 hours later then the owners might not have reacted the way they had and the deal would’ve eventually been completed: To those owners, this trade was like getting a pie in the face. They had walked out of a meeting where David had made them all get on the same page to save the season only for them to hear, “Surprise! The Lakers just acquired Chris Paul.” That gave them their I-told-you-so moment. I believe that if we could have delayed the trade for 24 or 48 hours, perhaps their heads wouldn’t have exploded. It was just that they felt no other teams had a fair chance to acquire Paul. As always, timing is everything. Who knows, if this deal did go down 24-48 hours later then it may have been completed without an uproar from the other owners around the league. Then again, landing the best point guard in the game at that time is something most around the league didn’t want to see, especially as the Lakers had just been swept out of the playoffs by the Dallas Mavericks and it looked like their most recent reign was over. The Lakers were making moves once again and the other teams didn’t like it; they complained to David Stern and changed the direction of the Lakers’ franchise by getting the commissioner, who was acting as the owner of the Hornets at the time, to nix the deal. And then, in the end, Paul ends up getting traded to Los Angeles anyway. So much for that “small market” crap. .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } @media(min-width: 500px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 300px; height: 250px; } } @media(min-width: 800px) { .bottom-of-post-responsive { width: 336px; height: 280px; } }
