NASCAR has had its share of big names. Earnhardt, Waltrip, Petty, Stewart, Johnson, Pearson, and Gordon are only a few of the best drivers ever to get behind the wheel. Their ability to race and compete with one another helped NASCAR become what it is today. Jeff Gordon would go onto to become one of the most recognizable faces in auto-racing and helped move NASCAR into the 2000s by racing hard with new drivers. Jeff Gordon has hoisted the Cup trophy four times in his career but his last NASCAR Championship was in 2001. Since then Gordon has been unable to reach the Cup’s victory circle but continues to compete on the Sprint Cup circuit. Now in 2013, 21 years after his original race in 1992 and first full season in 1993, Gordon stands to miss the Race to the Sprint Cup as he stands outside the top ten with no wins. However, that is not for a lack of trying, Gordon and his number 24 team have five top-five finishes and 11 top-10 finishes in 2013. Unfortunately for Gordon and Hendrick Motorsports, the team got off to a wretched start, finishing 20th in the Daytona 500 and not even cracking the top three until April 7th at Martinsville. Gordon has also finished outside the top-20 seven times this season, which has helped hand him a 6-point deficit behind 10th place in the Sprint Cup standings. That is not to say that Gordon has not been struck by bad luck, every time he seems on the cusp of having a stellar race a malfunctioning car or ill-timed wreck has cost him. Now with only one race left in NASCAR’s regular season, Gordon needs a very good finish to make the Sprint Cup Chase for the Cup. The last race is at Richmond International Raceway and if Gordon can repeat last year’s second place finish or better yet, a win in the race, he could find himself safely in the Chase come post-race. NASCAR would love to have Gordon in the Chase, a three-way competition between Hendrick Motorsport’s Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Jeff Gordon would be a marketing dream, especially if it came down to a late season race. Not to mention another Hendrick teammate at number 12 in the Sprint Cup standings, Kasey Kahne. Jeff Gordon is good for NASCAR. With a fast car, courage to say what he thinks, and a smart team, Gordon is still a NASCAR star who needs to matter in the last ten races.
