Quinton Coples, listed at 6’6” 290 Lbs., a 4-star recruit out of high school, played 4 seasons of ACC football at North Carolina. During his tenure with the Tar Heels, Quinton had 144 tackles, 40.5 tackles for loss, 24 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, and 4 passes defended. Coples did not receive much playing time during his freshman and sophomore seasons. However, his junior and senior seasons were tremendous, both seasons he received 1st team All-ACC honors. In the 2012 NFL Draft, Quinton Coples was selected in the first round, 16th overall by the New York Jets. Quinton Coples played well in the first 16 games of his NFL career. Coples collected 30 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and 2 passes defended during his rookie season. His more notable games came against the 49ers (2 tackles, 2 tackles for loss), Colts (4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 sacks), and Rams (3 tackles, 1 tackle for loss). Something that is worth noticing, Coples had a really strong ending to the season. In the final 4 games of the season, he had racked up 10 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 1 pass defended. Quinton Coples’ NFL Defensive Statistics: 30 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, 2 passes defended My Take: Quinton Coples has really blossomed into a centerpiece of the NY Jets defense. With the Jets drafting Sheldon Richardson during this year’s draft, it moves Coples to more rush based position of OLB. During college, Coples played a lot of DE and OLB, so the move would come as second nature for Quinton. Unfortunately, we took a huge hit in preseason, as Coples went down with an ankle injury that was initially characterized as a 3-4 week injury. Now it’s turned into surgery-needed and “out indefinitely”.  Losing Coples for any extended period of time this year will be a huge hit to this defense.   Assuming Quinton Coples returns by or around Week 5-6, he should still be able to collect 30 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 2 passes defended.
