Week 5: @ Atlanta Falcons
Geno Smith went 16 for 20 (67%), 199 yards, and 3 TD, as well as rushing 3 times for 21 yards. Bilal Powell led the way on the ground with 38 rushing yards on 12 carries. Geno’s two favorite targets, in Week 5, were Jeff Cumberland (3 rec, 79 yards, 1 TD) and Jeremy Kerley (5 rec, 68 yards, 1 TD).
The defense held Atlanta to 299 passing yards and only 64 rushing yards.
The defensive standouts for Week 5 were David Harris (14 tackles) and Mo Wilkerson (7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack). A couple of other standouts are Sheldon Richardson (5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 1 pass defended) and Darrin Walls (4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 passes defended) who played outstanding coverage on Roddy White all night long. Walls was also very close to picking off Matt Ryan and running it back for 6 but he tried to run it back for 6 before actually picking it off.
The New York Jets seem to have slowed down with the penalties, only 6 for 24 yards.
Geno played the best game of his young career Monday night, helping bring the Jets record to 3-2 (1-1 AFC East).
Geno put together an outstanding final drive to move into field goal range for Nick Folk. This is Geno’s 3rd game winning drive in the 4th quarter this season. After putting up a QBR of 7.8 last week, Geno turned it around and posted a QBR of 73.2. That was good for 9th best in the NFL this week. Smith brought his total QBR for the season up to 43.7. Nick Folk is still perfect (11 for 11) on the season in his FG tries after nailing the 43 yarder as the clock expired to give the Jets a 30-28 victory over the Falcons. This is Folk’s 2nd game-winning FG this season.
My Take: The offensive line played well enough to help mix up the play calling. Credit Marty Mornhinweg with the outstanding play calls that confused the very young linebackers and kept the Atlanta defense off balance all night. Geno looked very poised in the pocket this week, consistently making the right decision. I’ve mentioned in previous JBTN’s that the Jets needed to protect the football in order to win games. Monday, the Jets had 0 turnovers resulting in a 30-28 win over a very tough opponent.
