If one incident proved this week that, while class may be permanent form is certainly a favourable attribute to have, it was in New York as the Jets beat Arizona thanks to the unlikeliest of players. The Jets, on a 4-7 record heading into the game and outsiders in the NFL betting odds thanks to having one of the worst offences in the NFL, overcame fellow strugglers Arizona 7-6 in a lacklustre display on Sunday. Usual quarterback Mark Sanchez was benched for the first time in his career after playing an uninspired game when, in the third quarter, Jets coach Rex Ryan replaced the 26-year-old with third-choice QB Greg McElroy. He did not disappoint. McElroy threw the game’s only touchdown, a one-yard pass to Jeff Cumberland to send spectators in the MetLife Stadium wild – a chant of “Mc-El-Roy!” soon erupting around the arena. Indeed, so good was McElroy’s performance that Sanchez’s chances of starting another game for the Jets in the coming weeks have been severely dented, with fans in the betting world considering his tenure as no.1 quarterback now under threat. For while McElroy threw a tidy five of seven and successfully rushed four of five, Sanchez was poor with the ball in hand: completing just 10 of 21 throws, advancing just 97 yards and being intercepted three times. He may be one of the most prominent names in NFL news headlines over recent years but class was made to look inferior to form as McElroy made a debut success. To make matters worse for Sanchez, Ryan insists he will not name his starting QB for the Week 14 game with Jacksonville until the last minute. With Tim Tebow still recovering from two broken ribs Sanchez, with 59 appearances in the NFL, is battling for his place against a man yet to complete two full quarters in the professional game. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fcuzoogle.com%2F2012%2F12%2F06%2Fjets-find-hero-in-unlikely-third-choicer%2F'; addthis_title = 'Jets+find+hero+in+unlikely+third+choicer'; addthis_pub = '';
