Even though the New York Jets drafted Geno Smith in the second round of this year’s NFL draft, general manager John Idzik claims that Mark Sanchez will get to compete.
“What this means for Mark is competition,” said Idzik, per ProFootballTalk.com.
Idzik was then asked if there are plans to cut him, like ESPN reported.
“There are plans to let him compete,” he replied.
We reported this weekend that it looks like Mark Sanchez’s days as a Jet are numbered. It looks like that might not be the case just yet.
According to Bob Glauber of Newsday, the Jets plan on keeping Sanchez on the roster heading into the preseason.

COMING TO AN END
The Jets' selection of Geno Smith could lead to the team releasing quarterback Mark Sanchez despite the salary cap hit.
After enduring one of the most embarrassing descents in NFL Draft history, prolific West Virginia University quarterback Geno Smith was chosen with the 39th overall pick by the New York Jets on Friday. The 22-year-old Smith, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.59 seconds at the NFL Combine in February, was projected as a top-10 pick by many insiders. To pacify the native Floridian, elite...
According to a report from the NY Post, Tim Tebow has be cut by the New York Jets as of Monday morning. Though he showed up 15LBs lighter to volunatary workouts which began last week, and an improved throwing motion, the disaster that was Tim Tebow in New York is no longer. It comes as no surprise with the selection of Geno Smith in the 2nd round of this past weekend’s NFL Draft...

Former New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet had the unenviable task of announcing the team's 39th pick in front of the raucous Jets faithful inside Radio City Music Hall Friday night. And, even before the fan favorite finished the name "Geno Smith," loud strains of mostly boos from the stunned crowd swept throughout the massive concert hall.
Smith was labeled...
The dust has finally settled on the New York Jets draft weekend. Since Thursday night there have been eight additions to the team’s roster, including six draft picks. We will individually spend time in the film room to break down each draft selection in-depth (and Chris Ivory) in the coming weeks. However, let’s round everything up to cap off the weekend.

Friday was either a very good day or a very, very bad day to be named Sanchez in the sports world, as Sanchez stars from New York to Detroit to St. Louis had some of the best and worst evenings in the history of professional athletics.
There was more to boo than there was to cheer for the Sanchez contingent, but for the sake of keeping things light off the bat, we'll start with...
