San Francisco 49ers head man Jim Harbaugh had some interesting things to say about wide receiver Randy Moss recently.
During a segment on Sirius XM NFL Radio, Rich Gannon talked about a conversation he had with 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The excitable leader of the Niners told Gannon that Randy Moss is “our best receiver right now.”
Harbaugh has been impressed by Moss’s ability to lead thus far and encourage his fellow receivers to become more engaged during team meetings.
There are three ways to take Harbaugh’s statement:
1. It’s an obvious one. Moss is a first ballot Hall of Famer. Based off of his accomplishments, of course he is the top receiver on a team that includes Michael Crabtree, Mario Manningham, and rookie A.J. Jenkins. The Niners aren’t exactly trotting out the resurrection of the 1999 Rams in the receiving department.
2. Or even a watered down version of Moss is still better than a group that was missing in action during the NFC title game last January against the Giants. Remember, Moss was last seen catching 28 passes on three different teams in 2010. If he has something left in the tank, the needle is barely above empty.
3. This could be some form of reverse psychology by Harbaugh on Crabtree. So far, Crabtree has not lived up to being the 10th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
As for Jenkins, a first-round selection in the 2012 draft, check out this fun nugget from Grant Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat:
“The Niners’ first-round pick looked like one of the worst wide receivers on the field most of minicamp. He didn’t play with the first- or second-team offense on Tuesday, and he didn’t catch a pass in scrimmages on Wednesday. He had trouble staying on his feet all three days, which was odd considering it was a non-contact minicamp. Overall, undrafted receivers Nathan Palmer and Brian Tyms caught many more passes and made more impressive plays than Jenkins did.”
Thus, either Moss is back or the Niners are in trouble at wide receiver. Despite suggestions that this is the deepest and most talented set of receivers the Niners ever fielded
My money is on the latter.
