The temporary euphoria over Bruce Rondon’s unhittable performance on Tuesday night vanished today with two words from Jim Leyland. “Not good” the Tigers manager said when asked how Rondon was feeling. Rondon pitched Tuesday night after he missed three weeks because of a sore elbow. The rookie right-hander entered for the eighth with a 4-2 lead and faced the Nos. 3-4-5 hitters in the Minnesota lineup. He struck them all out. On a total of 10 pitches. Without a foul ball. And with two of the swings coming on pitches that bounced in or near the other batter’s box. But no matter how well any pitcher throws in his first outing back from an injury the pending question is how he will feel the next day. Leyland issued that caution on Tuesday night after Rondon’s overwhelming outing. So he didn’t appear shocked to learn today that Rondon was unavailable to pitch. Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said on Rondon: “He came in today with some complaints of discomfort in his elbow similar to what he had in Boston (where problem surfaced three weeks ago). So we’re just going to treat him today try to get it quieted down and re-evaluate him. (It’s in) the same location as what he felt. We obviously have to err on the side of caution and treat him today with an off-day tomorrow and re-evaluate him.” Leyland didn’t offer any indication of when Rondon might pitch again. Who knows now if he’ll be available for the playoffs next week? The way Rondon threw on Tuesday he looked like a lock for the playoff roster. Leyland said he had hoped to have Rondon as the closer on Wednesday night because Joaquin Benoit would be unavailable after pitching the previous two days. But the tantalizing idea that Rondon — a closer of the future — could become the closer of the present by getting the division-clinching final out on Wednesday night ... all that vanished when he showed up at Target Field and said his arm didn’t feel good. As Leyland said in response to more than one question about Rondon: “Not good.”
