In this edition of “Football Nation Today,” Alex looks at the landscape in the NFL as we enter the start of free agency:1st Down: Alex begins the program by looking at Joe Flacco’s record-setting six- year contract worth $120 million.  How much value does Flacco have to the Ravens, and is this an indication that they view him as a building block for years to come?Alex says it’s doubtful that Flacco will earn the contract, but he doesn’t have to.  He has a mild salary cap hit of $6.8 this year, and $14.8 million in 2014.  After that, when his cap hit skyrockets, the Ravens can restructure the deal if Flacco isn’t worth this money.  The contract isn’t permanent, just like every other contract in the NFL.A mere eight players were franchised this week, and Alex says that’s a sign many teams around the league expect players to be available for below market value this offseason.  Which teams are in the best position to take advantage of this environment? 2nd Down: Alex sounds off on NFL teams who questioned Manti Te’o and other players about their sexuality at the Combine last week.  The NFL has to progress, and it has to come by force.  Roger Goodell, who has a gay brother, is in a position to lead on this issue.  Is his legacy going to be the commissioner who paved the way for the first openly gay NFL player, or the commissioner who spent his time disciplining players for wearing their socks improperly? 3rd Down: In the “Big Up or Slow Down” segment, Alex debates whether the Jets are in a position to drastically improve their quarterback situation this offseason, if Randy Moss has a place on a contending team and if it’s cool that Jeff Saturday is retiring with the Colts.4th Down: In the “Reimer Rant,” Alex talks about ESPN columnist Jeffri Chahida’s piece about how the Tom Brady contract extension is a sign that the Patriots’ run of success is over.  Another national sports columnist, in a thin-veiled attempt to be a provocative, makes a fool out of himself.  Shocking … NOT.Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1.
