Twins catcher Joe Mauer will spend a few extra days with his wife and their new twin daughters. A team spokesman confirmed Friday that Mauer, who went on the paternity list Wednesday, will stay in the Twin Cities throughout the weekend and will rejoin the team on Tuesday at Target Field. The paternity leave list, a relatively new thing in Major League Baseball, allows players to be away from the team for up to three days. Friday marks the third day for Mauer, but the family decided it would be best for him to stay a few more days with daughters Emily and Maren, who were born more than a month premature. Dustin Morse, the team's director of baseball communications, said the team supports the Mauers' decision. On Saturday, Mauer will be moved from the paternity list to the restricted list. That means he will not collect his salary (around 142,000 per game) for the few days he is on the restricted list -- not that it's a big loss to Mauer, who was scheduled to earn 23 million this year. To fill Mauer's spot on the roster, the Twins recalled catcher Drew Butera from Triple-A Rochester. What looked to be a three-day fill-in for Butera may not last through the weekend with Mauer back home in Minnesota. Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter
