Phil Kessel has a record now, and while noted pugilist John Scott is fine with that, he doesn’t necessarily hold anything against the Maple Leafs forward, either. Kessel was suspended three games Tuesday for his role in an on-ice altercation Sunday night between the Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres. Kessel and Scott did some pushing and shoving before Scott dropped his gloves and went after the much smaller Kessel. The Toronto forward’s natural instinct was to whack at Scott’s legs with his stick and then get one more chop in once Scott was being tackled by Kessel’s Toronto teammate. The three-game ban that was handed down to Kessel will ensure that he misses the rest of the preseason, but it won’t cost one of the club’s most important players any time in the regular season. That’s fine by Scott, who sounds ready to get on with life more than anything else. “I’m fine with it,” he said when asked about the suspension, according to the Buffalo News. “It’s one of those things he’s just prot

NHL Suspends Leafs’ Phil Kessel for Remainder of Preseason, Fines Sabres Coach After Massive Line Brawl

The NHL has handed down more punishment following the gigantic line brawl that erupted in Sunday night’s game between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. One day after giving Leafs winger David Clarkson an automatic 10-game suspension because he left the bench to join the line brawl, the league banned teammate Phil Kessel for the remainder of the preseason (three games...

Toronto Mapple Leafs: Forward Phil Kessel Suspended for the Rest of the Pre-Season

Well, that was swift, the wheel of justice has been spun. I think Kessel's suspension should be longer, because this is the second stick swinging incident for the Leafs star forward in the pre-season. That's unacceptable and that needs to be addressed going forward. We don't want the NHL to start resembling the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation or the movie Slap Shot. Apparently...

Kessel to have a in-person hearing with the NHL on Tuesday

From TSN... Toronto Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel has a disciplinary hearing scheduled for 4pm et Tuesday. The hearing will concern Kessel's participation in a brawl that erupted between the two Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres Sunday night. Forward John Scott dropped his gloves and went after Kessel just seconds after a fight between Leafs forward Jamie Devane and...

Mike Augello: Kessel Scheduled For Hearing; Leafs Vs Senators

Maple Leafs winger Phil Kessel will have a phone meeting with National Hockey League Director of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan at 4:45pm on Tuesday to review the match penalty he received for the stick incident with Buffalo’s John Scott on Sunday night. Following the 10 game suspension dished out by the league on Monday night to winger David Clarkson for leaving the bench...

Maple Leafs' Phil Kessel suspended for last three pre-season games

To follow the fallout from the Leafs-Sabres suspension story required some suspension of disbelief. In short David Clarkson is now playing but soon won’t be Phil Kessel can’t play but soon will and Buffalo coach Ron Rolston is a little lighter in his wallet for a line change with a costly one-liner from John Scott. Clarkson who was considering an appeal of his 10-game sentence...

Phil Kessel Hockey Pool Picks 2013 2014

Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs is the #10 forward points-only hockey pool pick. He is an American born right winger who is 25 years old. Kessel showed last season that he is an amazing playmaker as well as a sniper. He is the Maple Leafs’ franchise player and an excellent addition to your fantasy team. A downside to drafting is he gets frustrated when he is not scoring goals and

Unwritten Rules in Sports are Ridiculous

Unwritten rules in sports are becoming a problem. Don’t watch your home run. Don’t go after the star player. Don’t do this, don’t do that. This past weekend, there was a line between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs. It all started after Corey Tropp was handily beaten and bloodied by the Leafs’ Jamie Devane midway through the third period of a 5-3 Leaf victory...

NHL Hockey: Did John Scott Break the Hockey Code?

As I suspected, David Clarkson has been suspended by the NHL for 10 regular-season games for leaving the bench to join a fight/altercation. This is the second 10-game suspension of the pre-season already. The think that I find funny; the Toronto Maple Leafs are the only ones in this whole mess that will face any time on the beach. The Leafs Phil Kessel has a phone hearing fo rhis...

Sabres Coach Ron Rolston Fined

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Frank Gunn) If there was ever a reason to simply laugh at the way the NHL is run in terms of supplementary discipline, this may be that reason: the NHL has fined Sabres head coach Ron Rolston for “player selection and team conduct.” You read that right, a coach has been fined for putting a player out on the ice who was already of there in the first...

GARTH'S CORNER: Ass Backwards

One of these days, the NHL and its Player Safety Department (or lack thereof) will stop their annoying lip-service and become serious about protecting that 725 players who comprise the NHLPA. When I first heard the verdict regarding Phil Kessel's three game "suspension", I laughed. I seriously snorted aloud in a group of people whom I was standing with. I showed...

GARTH'S CORNER: Joffrey Takes A Run At Scott

So, as we await the announcement from the NHL as to how many games that Toronto Maple Leafs lumberjack Phil Kessel will be suspended fro pole-axing John Scott's legs on Sunday night, his teammate Joffrey Lupul fired some harsh words towards Buffalo's 6'8" 270 lb. enforcer after Tuesday's practice. On Monday, Leafs tough guy Nazem Kadri said that he had to...

NHL Hands Down Suspensions To Maple Leafs

(Photo Credit: John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports) Buffalo, N.Y. — Following their roles during a brawl in Sunday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres, the NHL has handed down suspensions to David Clarkson and Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The players were suspended Tuesday after the NHL reviewed the incident. Kessel will serve […]

Clarkson to play preseason game

The Maple Leafs will have suspended forward David Clarkson in their lineup Tuesday night for a preseason game against the Ottawa Senators, but will be without Phil Kessel. Clarkson received an automatic 10-game suspension from the NHL -- that doesn't begin until the regular season -- for leaving the bench to join a fight. Clarkson is allowed to play in preseason games, including...

On Monday afternoon, I was shocked and disappointed to hear TSN 1050 "broadcaster" Jeff O'Neill calling Sabres head coach Ron Rolston a "pencil neck geek". Seriously. Nice professionalism, Jeffie. Bitter hack. O'Neill represents a faction of Toronto media snobs who in the aftermath of the John Scott-Phil Kessel incident, have felt the urge to share...
