One day after almost becoming the new football coach at Arizona State, June Jones issued a statement reaffirming his commitment to SMU. Jones said he was "open and honest" with SMU officials during his talks with Arizona State. Those negotiations broke down suddenly Wednesday afternoon, even after several media outlets began reporting his hiring by ASU. Jones also said multiple schools have contacted him about openings in the past week. He said he did not "seek them out" but he did listen to offers. In his statement, Jones said he is committed to SMU and is appreciative of the administration's understanding while entertaining other opportunities. Jones reiterated his statements during a Wednesday press conference in Birmingham, Alabama for the BBVA Compass Bowl, where the Mustangs will play Pittsburgh on Jan. 7. "One of the prices of winning is you get contacted a lot of times for different opportunities," Jones said in story by The Associated Press. "I had an opportunity that appealed, so I listened. I'm very happy at SMU." Jones' statement: "In the past week, multiple schools have contacted me about their vacant head coaching positions. I did not seek them out, but I did listen to these opportunities. I was open and honest with the SMU administration throughout this process and I am very appreciative of their understanding. I am happy with the progress we have made at SMU and am committed to this University. We have accomplished much, but I believe we can do much more. I'm thankful for the opportunity to lead the SMU football program as we return to national prominence and make the monumental move into the Big East Conference. We will now turn our focus to the BBVA Compass Bowl - our third straight bowl berth - and to finalizing an amazing 2012 recruiting class. The future is bright for SMU football."
