Kevin Garnett won’t be donning No. 5 when he puts on his Brooklyn Nets uniform this season, but he has a pretty good reason for the change.
Garnett will be wearing No. 2 as a tribute to his late friend and teammate, Malik Sealy. On May 20, 2000, the Timberwolves guard was leaving Garnett’s birthday party when a drunk driver crossed into Sealy’s lane and crashed head-on into his SUV.
Although the two only played one full season together in Minnesota, Garnett and Sealy shared a close friendship. KG even sported No. 21 with the Timberwolves because that was Sealy’s number when he played at St. John’s. Garnett also got a tattoo with Sealy’s name on his right arm shortly after the accident.
The blockbuster trade that sent Garnett to Brooklyn allowed Garnett the opportunity to pay tribute to his close friend for the first time. The Timberwolves retired Sealy’s number in 2000 and the Celtics have the number retired in honor of Red Auerbach.

That night in St. Louis Park still weighs heavily on Kevin Garnett's heart.
For all of the pains and tribulations the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise has endured since Garnett's departure for Boston, none, of course, compare to what struck the organization early in the morning on Saturday, May 20, 2000. It was then that teammate and fan favorite swingman Malik Sealy was...

Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce have done what many superstars leaving a team now do--they have taken out a full page ad in the local paper to say thanks to the city and the fans for the years of support. It's a move that is almost expected from superstars nowadays as often as it happens, but it still doesn't stop it from being cool every time it does.
The trade is finally official today. Classy move by the organization, I'd expect nothing less.
