If I could name one Wizards player who had a remarkably overlooked season, it would be Kevin Seraphin.  Following a tiring (yet promising) Olympics run, Seraphin returned to the team, finding himself in a bench role after starring for a stretch to close the 2011-2012 season. Kevin saw his minutes fluctuate and his roles shuffled, all while the Wizards got off to its worst start in franchise history. For a player entering his third season, this sort of mess could have easily sent him adrift. Instead, Seraphin quietly posted career-best numbers. Scoring: Kevin improved offensively this season, posting new highs in points per game (9.1), field goals made per game (4.2), and free throw percentage (69%).  While his field goal percentage dropped this year (down from 53% to 46%), Seraphin also saw an uptick in his minutes played per game, which can be tied to his increased field goal attempts per game. Court Awareness: Seraphin at times this season struggled on both sides of the ball.  Defensively, he’s had issues with rotations and help defense, sometimes leading to easy inside shots for the opposition or cheap fouls.  Offensively, he expanded his basket-facing game, albeit sometimes at the detriment of his personal and team statistics.  Overall, I’d say this aspect of his game is still a work in progress. Offensive Value: Kevin expanded his game this year, incorporating a 12-foot jumper.  This new asset, however, worked against him sometimes, as he’d take shots very early in the clock, or simply because he was open. Toward the end of the season, Kevin treated his minutes more valuably, making better offensive decisions and playing closer to the basket.  The result was an increased field goal percentage and overall better control. Defensive Value:  Defensively, Seraphin’s value decreased this season, most notably in the rebounding and blocked shots categories.  While this decline may be reasonably linked to his erratic minutes, Seraphin also saw an increase in his fouls per game (2.7), which continues to be a weak part of his game. Hustle/Effort: With the exception of shot blocking, Kevin’s hustle remained about the same.  The team will always benefit from his tough play, but Kevin played much smarter this season and made fewer mistakes. Basketball Swag:  Well, this still exists: Final Player Grade: C+. Seraphin showed solid improvement this year and played well within his assorted roles.  With Nene’s health a looming concern, Seraphin has proven to be a capable role player.
