Found February 09, 2013 on Kukla's Korner:
The question I've heard the most regarding Red Wings forward and 26-year-old phenom "Damien Brunner" is, "How did the Red Wings find this guy?" The answer isn't simple, but the Detroit News's Gregg Krupa sat down with Brunner to find out how he slipped through so very many cracks before spurning the Minnesota Wild, playing one more season in Switzerland and then agreeing to join the Wings after Mike Babcock and Ken Holland sold him on the team during last spring's World Championships. The blunt answer is that, quite frankly, he wasn't always a star in the making, and as he told Krupa, he struggled so very much with the Kloten Flyers some five years ago that he was traded--and trades are as likely to occur in European hockey as Mickey Redmond is likely to fall in love with a composite hockey stick: "In my second year and the beginning of the third year at [Kloten], the coach didn't see me on his roster or in an offensive role,&q...

Oilers vs Red Wings Recap: 2.9.2013

First game all year that the Red Wings controlled the play from start to finish and the result was a 2-1 win over the Oilers. If Edmonton was going to win this game it was going to be with the power play, but Detroit's PK was very good. Wings also dominated the faceoffs which prevented the Oilers from starting many man advantages in Detroit's zone. More after the jump...

Kings vs Red Wings Recap: 2.10.2013

Red Wings dug deep today and pulled out a 3-2 win against the defending champs. With the kind of the pressure the Kings were putting on I thought it was just a matter of time before they tied the game and it was. I sure didn’t expect what happened next, though. Good play by all involved, especially Big Rig who got the winner with less than 5 seconds remaining. More after the...

Belated: Todd Bertuzzi is like the rest of us with bad backs: ‘day to day’

Sorry this is so very late, but I kinda crashed after a pair of nights with little sleep and some fun fun fun moving of cars around the condo parking lot early in the morning. There's something of a modicum of good news on the back injury front! MLive's Ansar Khan reports that Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi is just dealing with the kinds of issues that those of us with bad...

Mighty Mrazek shines in debut

Petr Mrazek (centre) made 26 saves in his NHL debut to earn a 5-1 victory. (Photo from Getty Images) Making his NHL debut, 20-year-old rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek made 26 saves to guide the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over their division rival St. Louis Blues. NHL decides that 5 and a game misconduct was enough punishment for Johan Franzen

I may be one of five people who had no problem with Red Wings forward Johan Franzen spearing David Perron after Perron smashed Franzen's face into the boards (since Franzen suffered a subdural hematoma after being concussed against the Colorado Avalanche in 2008, and you may remember how Gary Roberts welcomed Franzen back by punching him in the face repeatedly), especially as...

GDT - Game 12: Red Wings (6-4-1) host Kings (3-4-2) 12:30

Third game in four days for DET; a 5-1 beatdown against STL on Thursday, and a 2-1 "special teams" win yesterday against the Oil.  Nevermind what I said yesterday:  "If todays tilt is a special teams contest, you have to like the Oil's chances."  Obviously I have no clue what the hell I am talking aboot.  DET scored two PP goals, and much more importantly...

Mrazek wins NHL debut, Red Wings beat Blues

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Petr Mrazek made 26 saves in his NHL debut, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night. Detroit halted a two-game skid with its second win in three tries against St. Louis this season. The Blues, who beat Detroit 6-0 on Jan. 19, dropped their third in a row. They have lost three successive games in regulation for...

Johan Franzen receives match penalty and is ejected for spearing David Perron

This was an extremely stupid thing for Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen to do.  I understand he was upset that St. Louis Blues forward David Perron hit him when his back was turned, but that is still no excuse for turning around and spearing Perron right in the midsection.  Perron was already going to be assessed a boarding penalty for the hit on Franzen and went to the...

Red Wings-Kings quick take: three ways to win

Updated w/ stats and highlights at 3:35 PM: The Detroit Red Wings' 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings was anything but a thing of beauty, at least if you're not a fan of watching Jimmy Howard getting peppered with 47 shots... But the Red Wings managed to find a way to earn two points while playing their 4th game in 6 "nights," their 3rd game in 4 "nights...

Red Wings-Kings set-up and overnight report: on forward momentum, superstars and prospects

The Detroit Red Wings proved that they can still out-skill as well as out-will teams in their 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday, but today's game against Los Angeles (12:30 PM EST, NBC/TSN/97.1 FM, and the Wings are collecting smoke detectors for charity), but the Red Wings know they're in for a challenge and a half as they wrap up a slate of 4 games played...

State of Fans

Ah to be a Red Wings fan. To be a member of the Order, and belong to one of the most despised sub-cultures on the planet. Hated in the hockey world like Yankees fans in baseball, Cowboys fans in the NFL, Notre Dame fans in the NCAA level and loving every damn minute of it. I always look to our undying spirit yet unreasonably high expectations as a function of the sustained success...

Mrazek and the role players come up big in Wings’ 5-1 win over Blues

All of a sudden that 6-0 opening season loss to the Blues seems like a long time ago. Thursday night the Wings defeated St. Louis 5-1 behind an impressive performance by rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek and the third and fourth lines. Mrazak who made his first career NHL start for a resting Jimmy Howard turned away 26 shots in the win while looking extremely confident between the pipes...

Emmerton's Game (And Maybe Season) Changing Goal

Post By Franklin Steele:  The Wings just caved in the collective faces of the Blues for the second consecutive time since the opening night fiasco (that's my punk band name for the week... nailed it) and I should be pretty stoked about the final score of 5-1. Petr Mrazek played very well, but there is one moment that stands out to me from this game. Emmerton's goal...
