Kyuji Fujikawa was signed to be Carlos Marmol's eventual replacement as Cubs closer. Now, just 12 innings into his stateside career, the right-hander needs Tommy John surgery. Fujikawa left his May 26 outing against the Reds with what the Cubs were hoping was a forearm strain -- the same injury that cost him a month on the DL earlier this season. Fujikawa told reporters after the outing that he felt a pop in his elbow while facing Joey Votto, though, and an MRI yesterday confirmed the worst. After being signed to a 2-year, $9.5 million deal this past winter, Fujikawa was quickly thrust into the closer's role when Marmol struggled out of the gate. Outside of two bad outings within the span of a week in April, he's been solid this season, striking out 14 batters in 12 innings and walking just two. Fujikawa landed on the DL following the second of those two nightmare appearances on April 12, but returned with a very strong month of May. In seven outings this month...

Daily Facepalm 5.29.13 – Edwin Jackson’s velocity and other news and notes

Edwin Jackson had a good/crappy night For the first time, Jackson looked like the pitcher the Cubs were expecting when they signed him to a four year deal. He hit 97 on the Sox gun (which Len and JD suggested may have been a little hot) with his fastball. Though the game ended up getting rained out, his pfx numbers are still in the brooks database (at least for now). Jackson came...

Kyuji Fujikawa Needs Tommy John Surgery, Out For Year

This isn’t the most exciting news…unless you’re Kevin Gregg.  In that case, prepare to have some statistics to back up your quest to receive a new contract next year because Kyuji Fujikawa is now out for the season.  Kevin Gregg, you may now scream “Huzzah!”  Brought in by Boy Genius Jed Hoyer to be a cheap and effective replacement for the carnival show that is Carlos...

Cubs Mock-Up Giant Right Field Ad (PHOTOS)

Cranes fill the streets around the Wrigley Field Bleachers this morning as the Cubs mock-up their proposed advertisements. They started in right field with an ad for "FFFFFFFFFFFF" (surely Budweiser in the future) and boy, it is large.  The purpose of the mock-up is to show the City and the rooftop owners how these signs will impact the views in and plenty of folks are...

Daily Facepalm 5.30.13 : It’s Dioner Navarro’s World, We’re Just Living In It

"The Dioner Navarro Game?" Navarro demolished White Sox pitching to the tune of 3 HR and 6 RBI yesterday. In his only PA in which he didn't hit the ball into the stands, he drew a walk and later came aroudn to score with the help of a Matt Lindstrom wild pitch and a single by pinch hitter Ryan Sweeney. Navarro raised his season wOBA from .271 to .365 in a single game...

Luis Valbuena’s 2013 season

With all the doom and gloom surrounding this year's offense and the intense focus on Castro and Rizzo, Luis Valbuena's fantastic season seems to have fallen through the cracks. Valbuena currently has a line of .248/.361/.421* on the year, good for a .339 wOBA and about 1 WAR through two months of the season. What the hell? *Today's game, in which Valbuena homered, will...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 5-30-13

Iowa Cubs 3 @ Nashville Sounds 4 Of course, the I-Cubs would lose to the Astros of AAA. No one really had a great day. I can tell you who had a bad day: Brett Jackson. He was 0-3 with a walk and 3 strikeouts. Dave Sappelt had a double and a walk, and that was the best day from any Cub. Logan Watkins was 1-5, and Ian Stewart took advantage of his start with a 0-4, 3 SO performance...

The Wood That Makes It Good

If you have Travis Wood on your fantasy team, you are a lucky duck.  For real! Travis Wood has been the bargain of bargains at the fantasy starting pitcher slot this season. Even I, a man with a certain fondness for Wood and fantasy crush on the entire Cubs rotation, could not, would not, have predicted the start that Travis Wood is having. The thing now, from the fantasy...

Cubs May Minor 28 League Recap

Javier Baez hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th to give Daytona a 7-5 win over the Tampa Yankees. LHP Chris Rusin (Iowa) and RHP Kyle Hendricks (Tennessee) both made quality starts to help their teams to victories. Kane County fell to the Quad Cities in a rain shorted game. Plenty of roster activity.

Wood gets it done with arm and bat

After three miserable games against their crosstown rivals, there wasn't much left for the White Sox to say. ''We just got beat in all facets of the game,'' White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko said. ''They were just the better team in every area.'' Cubs pitcher Travis Wood hit a grand slam off Jake Peavy and the White Sox lost 8-3 on Thursday...

Jumbotron Mocked-Up at Wrigley Field (PHOTOS)

With all the bigwigs looking down from the rooftops (Owner - Tom Ricketts, President of Business Operation - Crane Kenny and (strangely) former head of marketing - Wally Hayward), the Cubs mocked up the proposed Jumbotron at Wrigley Field.  It's difficult to get a true handle on exactly how big this thing will be (they only had tarps hanging on opposite ends of a pole) but...
