PLAYERS: Elvis Dumervil
TEAMS: Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos ended up cutting Elvis Dumervil even after he agreed to take a pay cut from $12 million to $8 million for the coming season. What? Yeah, the whole thing is a bit of a mess or as Newkirk on Hogan's Heroes would say, "Well this is a sticky wicket!" Translated into American lingo that means cluster****. Finding out the truth on this deal might take a little time. Type in 'Elvis Dumervil' to your search engine and the first story that comes up says he was cut, but the second one says he signed. Huh? It confused me a little bit too! As it turns out the link to the article that says he signed (off goes directly to the 'NFL News' page and not an article. So according to the other article from the Denver Post the team had no choice but to cut Dumervil. The two sides did not agree to a new contract till about 1:25 PM. It had to be signed and delivered to the team by 2 PM. It got there at 2:07:07. #Broncos had to protect themselves. It was 1:59. No signed deal. Had they not released Elvis Dumervil, $12 mil would have been guaranteed — Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013 When 2 PM got close the team was put in a bind. Without the new contract in hand when the clock hit 2 PM they would be forced to pay him the original $12 million. Since that was what they were trying to avoid in the first place they had to cut him without the new contract in hand. Now from what I hear there will now be salary cap implications for the team since Dumervil was officially cut. The team could sign him still of course, but Dumervil could also look elsewhere and see if someone will give him the money he wanted in the first place. This little drama is certainly not done. It will be interesting to see what happens next, but for now ladies and gentleman-- [UPDATE]--The Broncos are now saddled with $4.89 million in dead money since Elvis is no longer a Bronco. If I'm reading this right, Broncos may now be confronting $4.869 million in dead money against cap with Elvis Dumervil release. Complicated — Mike Klis (@MikeKlis) March 15, 2013 [Denver Post]

The Broncos Suck At Fax Machines

The Broncos thought they looked like a bunch of shrewd cap geniuses for getting linebacker Elvis Dumervil to agree to a pay cut from his scheduled $12 million 2013 salary just before the team’s imposed 2 p.m. deadline on Friday was set to expire. If Dumervil didn’t agree to the pay cut, he would be released. Dumervil agreed to cut his salary to $8 million just half an hour before...
