Kobe Bryant made an appearance over the weekend in the Southern Chinese city of Shenzhen and when he met with reporters he immediately gave a boost to Lakers fans still reeling from the loss of free-agent center Dwight Howard. Bryant said that not only was he ahead of schedule in coming back from the surgery he had on his Achilles tendon back on April 13 but that he has “shattered” the timetable that would traditionally be associated with the injury. Bryant who tore the tendon with just two games to play in the Lakers’ season credited going with an innovative type of surgery on the tendon with his speedy recovery. “We don’t know” Bryant told the gathered reporters. “That’s the thing about this injury is that the surgical procedure was different how we did it was different. Because of that the recovery has been different the timetable has been different the normal timetable for recovering from an Achilles we’ve shattered that. Three-and-a-half months I can already walk just fine I am lifting weight just fine. So we don’t know what that timetable is going to be this is new territory for us all.” The normal rehab period for a player coming off Achilles tendon surgery is 9-to-12 months and even then there are frequently obstacles in making a complete comeback. Chauncey Billups for example had Achilles surgery in February of last year and attempted to come back in late November. He suffered other leg injuries though and played only 22 games.
