LaRussa Managing Skills

Posted July 24, 2010 on jsmithstl's Blog:

I can't believe I just watched the Cardinals get the first two batters on base, in the top of the 8th against the Cubs, just to watch LaRussa do what he has done so many times in the past. He totally mismanaged the situation. First, he let Ryan swing away. He hits a sure double play ball to 2nd, but somehow the 2nd basemen let's it go between his legs. Run scores, runners on 1st and 2nd with NO outs still. I'm thinking... YES!!! pitcher due up, bunt the runners over, then either a fly ball ties the game or a hit gives us the lead... but NOOOOO.. what does LaRussa do... He pinch hits with Winn, who hits a fly ball that doesn't allow Molina to advance to 3rd. The next batter hits into an inning ending double play. How sad. I'm sorry... I don't care if LaRussa has two WS rings. With the talent he had on the A's and Cards, he should have 4 or 5 WS championships. I think he has always been a bad manager and always will be. If the Cards win with him at the helm, they'll have to do it, in spite of Tony's poor decisions. I won't even get into his constant switching around of the lineup... That's a whole separate topic.

  • i agree 100% tony needs 2 give it up!
  • He is a manager who uses the seniority system - if you're a veteran, you get a pass. He lets his superstar loaf going to first base everytime he hits the ball. He bats the pitcher 8th?! In New York, Boston or Philadelphia they would run him out of town. He likes to lay low. He is arogant. In managers who have managed 2,000 games or more, he is 21st in winning percentage. Oh he may finish second in wins, but in real stats he will finish 21st.
