ESPN, TNT and everyone else have denounced the Lakers as contenders. The Princeton offence is silly. The new pieces are damaged goods. Kobe doesn’t have it anymore.
Many retort that it’s way too early to make these conclusions. And they’re right. But I want to point out a lack of backbone on the part of the mainstream media.
The mainstream media spent months this offseason breaking down how the Lakers became title favorites by acquiring Nash and Howard. They considered the strength of the West and still concluded LA was on its way back to the Finals. But after three games the same talking heads have said LA is headed towards disaster. All the work they put in to choosing them as potential champions flew out the window in three games.
Whether the Lakers will “figure it out” is irrelevant. My point is you’re getting a real impression of how meaningless the opinions of the mainstream media can be, when they’re so quick to flip their stances. Sure you’re allowed to change your mind once you see the action on the court. But wait more than three games to do it.
