The 9-3 Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will not be going to a bowl this year. Not because they’re like Ohio State, a school serving a bowl ban for various and sundry rules violations. And they’re obviously bowl eligible, so what gives? According to the Associated Press, Louisiana Tech had a bowl offer from the Independence Bowl to play the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks (a rival, I might add) on Saturday afternoon. However, the Bulldogs thought they had other opportunities with bowls that would, to be honest, pay more than the Independence Bowl (allegedly the Liberty Bowl), so they declined the invite to play a nationally-televised bowl game against a rival in their home state. But then Northern Illinois made the BCS, something Louisiana Tech should have predicted since they upset Kent State, who definitely would have made the BCS if they hadn’t been upset by NIU. Once Northern Illinois made the BCS, it pushed Oklahoma out and into another bowl. This, of course, ruined Louisiana Tech’s shot at another bowl because they were from the WAC, wouldn’t travel nearly as well as OU, and didn’t even win their conference (Utah State did). The resulting chain of events/musical chairs led to Louisiana Tech not having any bowl offers at all. The Independence Bowl took Ohio instead, and there wasn’t any other bowl available that didn’t have a conference tie-in. This, led to these two ironic, back-to-back tweets from head coach Sonny Dykes: Yeah, that couldn’t have gone worse for Louisiana Tech. This embarrassment is even higher-profile than the Independence Bowl would be. It’s also the latest illustration about the vagaries of money-grubbing in college football. Sonny Dykes also happens to be a head coaching candidate at several schools, though he apparently hasn’t interviewed yet. This does not reflect well on his leadership style. It would also look absolutely terrible if he did take another job because he is now free to move on instead of going through bowl prep with the Bulldogs. All in all, a total shambles on the part of Louisiana Tech. Well done, everyone. Well done indeed.
