Alex Galchenyuk to begin season with Canadiens

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens made seven cuts Friday morning to leave them with 23 healthy bodies in training camp, and top draft pick Alex Galchenyuk was not among those who were sent home.  Galchenyuk, the No. 3 pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, has spent the entire camp skating at left wing on the Canadiens' second line, and that's presumably where he'll be when...

Pivotal year for Kadri?

Speculation throughout the offseason focused on a potential Roberto Luongo-to-Toronto deal. And the most prevalent rumors out there suggested the Vancouver Canucks wanted a package involving Nazem Kadri and Tyler Bozak in exchange for the 33-year old netminder.  The deal never materialized though, reportedly because the Maple Leafs didn't want to part ways with Kadri -- arguably...

Lupul, one of leagues best scorers, re-signs with Leafs

The Leafs announced today that they have re-signed Joffrey Lupul to a 5 year contract extension at an average salary and cap hit of $5.25M/yr.  Some Leaf fans are a little dismayed at both the value and the term of the deal as many people seem to view Lupul as a second line winger with a defensive liability that should

Maple Leafs, Jets Among Top 10 Biggest Stanley Cup Long Shots Entering 2013 Season (Photos)

In a shortened season, anything is possible. With only 48 games standing between every team and the beginning of the NHL playoffs, a single hot or cold streak could be the difference between a chance at the Stanley Cup or a long summer waiting for next year. Even in a sprint to the finish, however, talent matters. That’s why the usual suspects (like the Bruins, Penguins and Blackhawks...

Toronto Maple Leafs looking to the future

For years, Brian Burke pushed off the idea of the rebuild the Maple Leafs have desperately needed since Lockout II. Rather, Burke tried to make-over the Leafs with toughness and grit while adding Phil Kessel and pleasant surprise Joffrey Lupul to boost the Leafs' scoring. Yet last week when Burke was shown the door in favor of new general manager Dave Nonis, the Leafs still...

Sabres-Maple Leafs Preview

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres each took their first steps toward putting behind a pair of disappointing seasons. If the recent matchups in Toronto are any indication, the Maple Leafs might have the better chance to win in their next game as well. While trying to get off to another strong start, they'll seek a sixth consecutive home victory over the Sabres on Monday...

What To Get In Return For Luongo

from TSN, Canucks general manager Mike Gillis appeared on Team 1040 Radio in Vancouver on Friday and talked about the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team reportedly interested in Luongo and what he feels was their attempt to manipulate the market for the veteran goalie. When asked to address the possibility that the team was looking for too much in return for Luongo, Gillis fired...

Maple Leafs-Canadiens Preview

With a combined 35 Stanley Cups, the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs are two of the league's proudest franchises. Neither team, however, is coming off a season to be particularly proud of. While there appears to be a glimmer of hope the Canadiens will see some improvements, it doesn't seem the Maple Leafs have done enough to get back into the playoff picture...

Habs set for season opener

So, the season is - finally - upon us. Three main storylines for tonight's tilt with the Maple Leafs as the season gets underway:   1) The kids are alright: Alex Galchenyuk and Brendan Gallagher crack the Habs roster. Galchenyuk will play on the 2nd line, and while not confirmed, I suspect Gallagher 3rd line an PP time. Why? Coach Michel Therrien said multiple times that...
