Marcos Ambrose started the originally scheduled 224-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Sonoma from the pole position. This was Ambrose’s second consecutive pole in two weeks and seventh top-10 start of the season. Ambrose finished today’s event in eighth place, marking his second consecutive top-10 finish and fourth overall of this season. After starting from the point position, Ambrose wasted no time taking an early lead and continued to pace the 43-car field for the first 11 laps of the 110-lap event. At Lap 12, Ambrose was unable to maintain the lead as Jeff Gordon took over the top spot. Shortly after falling to the second position, the Australian native keyed the mic to let Crew Chief Todd Parrott know that the Stanley Ford was lacking grip and side bite. As the early laps wore on, Ambrose’s car continued to get increasingly difficult to drive and he began to slip back several positions, running just inside the top 10 at Lap 30.
