Joe Saunders pitched seven efficient innings and Nick Franklin and Justin Smoak each homered to lift the Seattle Mariners to a 3-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. A day after the Reds scored 13 runs, they managed just six hits and a run off Saunders. The left-hander allowed only two baserunners to reach third in the first six innings and retired 11 consecutive batters before Chris Heisey doubled into the left field corner with one out in the fifth inning. Saunders (7-8) walked none and struck out two while winning back-to-back starts for the first time this season. Charlie Furbush pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Tom Wilhelmsen was perfect in the ninth for his 18th save, helping the Mariners pick up their second win of the three-game series and improve to 10-2 against the Reds since interleague play began in 1997. The Reds went down in order in six of their nine innings. Bronson Arroyo (7-7) overcame a 32-pitch first inning to complete six, allowing five hits and three runs w...

Seattle Mariners: What went right

There have been more downs than ups this season, but the Seattle Mariners are on a definite up after their recent six-game road trip.  Seattle faced two teams both ten games over .500, Texas and Cincinnati, and took both three-game series.  While it’s true the Mariners still haven’t swept any team this season, a 4-2 road trip against that kind of competition is a step in the...

Nick Franklin officially rejoins Mariners lineup

A sigh of relief was felt amongst the Mariners faithful today, as rookie standout Nick Franklin returned to the lineup for the first time since fouling a ball off his right knee during Friday's game. The foul came courtesy of a bunt attempt, which left the second baseman in obvious pain after the ball ricocheted square off the inside of his kneecap. In a testament to his intestinal...

Mariners' Mike Morse to begin rehab assignment this week

Seattle Mariners outfielder Mike Morse tested his ailing quadriceps strain -- which sent him to the 15-day disabled list on June 21 -- by running the bases this weekend. All seems to be going well in his rehab from injury, and manager Eric Wedge said if that continues to be the case Morse will begin a rehab assignment in the minors this week, according to Jeremy Warnemuende of...

Mariners designate starter Bonderman

Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman's comeback with the Seattle Mariners is over after he was designated for assignment following consecutive poor starts. The Mariners made the move on Monday. The team recalled left-handed reliever Lucas Luetge from Triple-A Tacoma to take Bonderman's roster spot but the Mariners will still need a starter for Thursday's game against the Boston...

Reds trying to break Mariners hex

After making an immediate impact in his return to the lineup, Michael Saunders will try to help the Seattle Mariners add to their dominance over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. Before a 4-2 victory in the series opener Friday, Saunders was limited to coming off the bench after his right middle fingernail was spiked on a pickoff play in a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs a week earlier...

Red Sox-Mariners Preview

After the Seattle Mariners' successful road trip, Felix Hernandez will try to help his club start posting better results at home. He'll be opposed by Jon Lester, who will attempt to end the Boston Red Sox's recent road woes by adding to his dominance over the Mariners on Monday night. Seattle (39-49) went 4-2 in visits to Texas and Cincinnati, completing the trek with...

Game 91: Red Sox at Mariners - Battle of Aces in Seattle

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer Two tough losses in Anaheim have put the Boston Red Sox (54-36) in a 1-2 hole to start the West Coast road trip. Typically, a series against the Seattle Mariners (39-49) is a relief for the Sox. But for a team struggling at the plate facing one of the game’s best pitchers (if not the best), tonight is not anticipated to be a strong night. Boston...
